Angels continue run through Southwest

[7/26/04]Bill McRight led the Vicksburg Angels with three hits and pitchers Cody Waddell and Kewayne Gaston combined to hold off New Orleans, 6-5, in the Cal Ripken Southwest Regional.

Gaston allowed one hit in the final three innings in relief of Waddell and the Angels rebounded from a 3-run deficit.

The team was scheduled to play Little Rock, Ark., today at 6 p.m. A win would send the Angels into the championship game, where they would have to be beaten twice.

If the team wins the regional, it would advance to the Cal Ripken World Series in Vincennes, Ind.

Angels advance past West Texas at Cal Ripken regional

[7/25/04]Kewayne Gaston held Plainview, Texas, scoreless after three innings on the mound, but his Vicksburg Angels held only a 1-0 lead.

Gaston broke the game open with a base-clearing, three-RBI triple in the fourth that spurred an 11-run inning and gave the Angels a 12-0 win.

The Angels advance to face New Orleans at 5 p.m. today in the third round of the 10-year-olds’ Cal Ripken Southwest Regional Tournament. The winner of the 10-team regional advances to the World Series in Vincennes, Ind., in August.

Josh Eargle had a two-run single, and Bill McRight, Cody Waddell and Jonathan Clay each had a pair of hits for the Angels, who totaled nine hits in the game.

Gaston allowed one hit in three innings with seven strikeouts, and Clyde Kendrick finished out the game with a perfect fourth inning.

Angels beat South Texas in regional

[7/24/04[The Vicksburg Angels took their first step toward a regional championship with a 7-1 win over Eagle Pass, Texas, in the opening round of the Cal Ripken Southwest Regional.

The victory propelled the Angels into today’s game against Plainview, Texas, at 11 a.m. The winner of the regional advances to the Cal Ripken 10-year-olds’ World Series in Vincennes, Ind., in August.

Travis Barnette and Jonathan Clay each had three hits to pace the Angels’ 11-hit attack. Matthew Mims doubled and Lamar Anthony belted a two-RBI single in the victory.

Vicksburg scored one run in the second inning and broke the game open with a four-run third for a 5-0 lead. The Angels tacked on two more runs in the fifth for a 7-0 advantage.

Cody Waddell pitched five shutout innings to record the win over the team representing South Texas.
