Luella Verneal Thompson Carter

Services for Luella Verneal Thompson Carter will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Greater Grove Street Baptist Church in Vicksburg City Auditorium. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon until 8 p.m. Saturday at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home with family hour at 7.

Mrs. Carter died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home. She was 51.

She was a member of Greater Grove Street Baptist Church.

Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by her mother, Willie Mae Lewis, and a brother, Daniel Lewis.

She is survived by her husband, Horace Carter of Los Angeles; two sons, Johnny Williams of Jackson and Jessie Lewis of Vicksburg; a daughter, Amanda Lewis of Vicksburg; her grandmother, Luvices Johnson of Waterproof, La.; four brothers, Dewitt Lewis and Delaware Lewis, both of New Orleans, Willie Lewis of Los Angeles and Robert Lewis of Waterproof; three sisters, Eveleaner Lewis and Jackie Lewis, both of Slidell, La., and Virginia Louis Birks of New Orleans; six grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and other relatives and friends, including members of the Williams, Cox, Harris, Bell and Kennedy families.

Alice M. Harris

Services for Alice M. Harris will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Morning Star Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home.

Mrs. Harris died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. She was 98.

She was a member of Morning Star Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

She was preceded in death by a son, Benjamin Harris; two brothers, Mose Braxton and George Braxton; and a sister, Carrie Braxton Green.

She is survived by a niece, Ora Lee Hooper and her niece and caregiver, Maxine Cox Wilson; other relatives, including Helen O’Neal, Camille Cox , Lucille Harris and Cheney Peterson; and members of the Hooper, Bell, Cox, Kennedy, Harris, Braxton and Williams families, all of Vicksburg.

Oren Russell

BATON ROUGE Oren Russell died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, La. He was 100.

Born in West Carroll Parish, Mr. Russell had been a longtime resident of Baton Rouge. He was a former resident of Vicksburg, where he worked for the Corps of Engineers.

He was a riverboat pilot for 56 years, having served as the captain of the Mississippi Queen and the Delta Queen for 10 years. He was a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church.

Mr. Russell was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Warren Russell; his parents, Lewis and Janie Castleman Russell; five sisters, Opal Jones, Odra Mathis, Olive Duhon, Dolly Newman and Omah Duhon; and two brothers, Fred Cook and Ogden Russell.

Survivors include a son, Oren Warren Russell of Baton Rouge; two grandchildren; and cousins, nephews and nieces, including Ann Penley of Vicksburg.

Services were at 2 p.m. Aug. 11 at Greenoaks Funeral Home in Baton Rouge with Dr. John W. Goodwin officiating.

Pallbearers were Scott Russell, Edwin Pinkston, Brien Guillory, Don Farrow, Kelly Walker and Charles Stevens.

Honorary pallbearers were John Walker and Capt. William “Sambo” Dean.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Annie Mae Wilson

PORT GIBSON Annie Mae Wilson died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at Claiborne County Hospital. She was 74.

Mrs. Wilson was a resident of Port Gibson and a member of St. Luke Christian Church. She was a retired teacher for Claiborne County Public Schools.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Wilson; a son, Mackentye Wilson; her parents, Nelson Shanks and Clara Pelmore; and a grandson, Glenn Wilson Jr.

Survivors include two sons, Glenn Wilson and Mal Wilson, both of Port Gibson; three daughters, Cynthia Bailey, Fay Davis and Sonja Lee, all of Raymond; two brothers, George Shanks of Chicago and James Wilson of Port Gibson; three sisters, Dora Wren and Shirley Jones, both of Port Gibson, and Mary Shanks of Chicago; 19 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Christian Church in Pattison with Elijah Harris officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery under the direction of Rollins Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from noon until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Friends of the family will serve as pallbearers.
