Evelyn I. Cave

MOBILE, Ala. Evelyn I. Cave died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, in Atlanta. She was 90.

Mrs. Cave was a longtime resident of Mobile, Ala. She worked for a number of years for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Mobile, serving as a clerk, development officer, chief of the Employee Utilization Branch, chief of Recruitment and Placement and retiring in 2001 as personnel director. She was a native of Atkinson, Neb.

She received a number of awards for her government work and letters of appreciation from former Presidents George Bush and Ronald Reagan.

Mrs. Cave helped organize the Azalea City Toastmistress Club and served as its first president. She was also a member of Gulf States Federal Personnel Counsel and the Society of American Military Engineers. She was executive secretary for the Board of U.S. Civil Service Examiners for 15 years.

She attended St. Francis Street United Methodist Church, serving as chairman of the Administrative Counsel, and was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence H. Cave Sr.; a son, Lawrence H. Cave Jr. of Vicksburg; a grandson, Lawrence H. Cave III; and her parents, Fred and Varinna Tasler.

Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Cave Shaw; a sister, Geraldine Neel; and four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Radney Funeral Home in Mobile. Burial will follow at Pine Crest Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s United Methodist Church in Mobile.

Percy Coleman

Percy Coleman died today, Sept. 23, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. He was 86.

A resident of Vicksburg, Mr. Coleman was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He was a retired porter with the Mississippi River Commission and a member of American Legion Tyner-Ford Post 213 and Spring Hill M.B. Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Coleman and Kizzy Young.

Survivors include his wife, Merinda T. Coleman of Vicksburg; three daughters, Shirley Coleman Harris and Johnnie Bernice Coleman Johnson, both of Vicksburg, and Jeanie Coleman Washington of Jackson; and others, including Jeanie Earl Coleman of Lake Providence and Henry Mayfield Jr. of Vicksburg.

W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Jackie McBroom Grant

Jackie McBroom Grant died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at Promise Specialty Hospital. She was 60.

Mrs. Grant was born in Vicksburg to the late Stanford Collier Sr. and Mollie Lucinda Sanders McBroom. With her husband, she operated Santa’s Lane, a drive-through holiday display on Freetown Road set up annually around Christmas.

She was a member of the Church of the Holy Trinity, Episcopal.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lester L. Grant, and a brother, Stanford Collier McBroom Jr.

Survivors include two daughters, Terri Grant Ulmer of Vicksburg and Kimberly Grant Mathews of Houston, Texas; a sister, Beverly Ruth Kling of Vicksburg; a brother, Joseph Vernon McBroom Sr. of Vicksburg; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Nation, rector of the Church of the Holy Trinity, Episcopal, officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

J.S. Montgomery

Services for J.S. Montgomery will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mercy Seat M.B. Church. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Williams Funeral Service.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Montgomery died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home. He was 81.

He was a former member of Seven-Star Baptist Church in Utica and a member of Mercy Seat M.B. Church in Vicksburg. He was retired from Anderson Tully Co., where he was a forklift operator and a logger.

He was preceded in death by his parents, A.J. Montgomery Sr. and Annie Mae Montgomery; his wife, Princess Montgomery; two brothers, Andrew Montgomery and A.J. Montgomery Jr.; a sister, Lillie Bell Swinney; and a daughter, Connie Regina Promise.

Mr. Montgomery is survived by two sons, Carl Lee Montgomery of Utica and Edward McWilliams of St. Joseph, La.; seven daughters, Daisy Mae Harris, Mary Jackson, Alice McWilliams, Cynthia Moore, Stephanie Curtis and Princess Shorter, all of Vicksburg, and Briggett Spencer of Utica; 26 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Chester Arthur Moore

EDWARDS Services for Chester Arthur Moore will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Little Zion M.B. Church in Edwards. Burial will follow at the church cemetery under the direction of Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 1 until 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Moore died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. He was 66.

He was a resident of Edwards.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Moore Sr. and Curaesee Moore; three brothers, Joseph Moore Jr., William F. Moore and Alfonso L. Moore; and two sisters, Olivia B. Ward and Marjorie E. Moore.

Survivors include three brothers, Christopher Moore of Biloxi, Lorenzo E. Moore Sr. of Gardenia, Calif., and Leonard Moore of Fort Worth, Texas; and three sisters, Carolyn J. Rene of Vicksburg, Florence Moore of Edwards and Ernestine M. Hailey of Blytheville, Ark.

Delphine Givens Smith

Services for Delphine Givens Smith will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon until 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Smith died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004. She was 46.

She was a 1976 graduate of Vicksburg High School and received her practical nursing license from Hinds Community College. She was employed by Malaco Records in Jackson and was a member of New Heights Seventh Day Adventist Church in Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Elisha Tolliver Sr.; her mother, Evelyn Givens Middleton; a brother, Harold L. Givens; and a grandson, Li’Trell Rashad Smith.

Survivors include three daughters, Priscilla Smith, Sandra Smith and Amanda Smith, all of Jackson; one son, Raymond Smith Jr. of Michigan; four sisters, Debra Scott and Nadia Middleton, both of Vicksburg, Dobra Pulliam of Memphis and Alexelisha Sanders Luckett of Jackson; three brothers, Benjamin Givens of Vicksburg, Joel Givens of Atlanta and Dennis Givens of Jackson; three grandchildren; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends, including Raymond Smith Sr. and Diane Cessna.
