Norman Ammons

JACKSON Norman Ammons died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. He was 86.

Born in Braxton, Mr. Ammons was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. After being honorably discharged in 1945, he moved to Port Gibson, where he worked as a bookkeeper. He was a former insurance salesman and game warden and had owned and operated Stuckey’s in Edwards for 23 years.

He lived in Vicksburg for a number of years before moving to Jackson 10 years ago. He was a member of Woodland Hills Baptist Church and a Mason.

He was preceded in death by a son, Orise Shields Ammons.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Frances McCollum Ammons of Jackson; a daughter, Norma Frances Case of Brookhaven; a son, Rick Elton Ammons of Santa Fe, N.M.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Woodland Hills Baptist Church with the Rev. W. Tyler Pigott Jr. officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home of Port Gibson.

Memorials may be made to Woodland Hills Baptist Church.

Preston Lanier Biggers

CORINTH Preston Lanier Biggers died Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at Magnolia Regional Hospital. He was 89.

Mr. Biggers graduated from Corinth High School in 1933 and attended the University of Mississippi, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He served three years in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

He was a partner and president of Biggers Hardware for 40 years and was a past president of the Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas Hardware Association, serving on that board for 12 years.

He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon and elder. He served on the water board and was involved with the Corinth Chamber of Commerce and a member of the board of directors of the YMCA of Corinth.

He was also a member of the Corinth Rotary Club and received the Paul Harris Fellow Award from the International Rotary Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and six brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Jimmie Lee Mills Biggers; three daughters, Peggy Biggers Thomas of Vicksburg, Betty Biggers Knight of Corinth and Jenny Biggers of Jackson; four grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church of Corinth with the Rev. Dr. Don Elliott officiating and assisted by Christy Morgan. Burial will follow at Henry Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at McPeters Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be John Orman, Steve Morelock, Hal Morelock, Larry Hancock, Nathan Adams and James Leatherwood.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
