John H. Elmore

John H. Elmore died today, Dec. 2, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. He was 90.

A veteran of the Army, Mr. Elmore served in World War II. He retired from Valley Mills and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by a son, Johnny O’Neal; two daughters, Rosemary O’Neal and Eliza O’Neal; and his parents, Jessie Elmore and Frances Floyd.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille Phoenix Elmore of Vicksburg; two sons, Joseph O’Neal of Vicksburg and Charles Phoenix of Norfolk, Va.; four daughters, Beatrice Thomas, Florence Kiner, Willie Jane Williams and Juanita O’Neal, all of Vicksburg; and 60 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Fred Griffin

Services for Fred Griffin will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Vicksburg Family Life Cathedral. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Williams Funeral Service.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Griffin died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. He was 67.

A resident of Vicksburg, Mr. Griffin was a self-employed carpenter. He was a member of the Red Top Band in 1960 and a member of Mount Carmel Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Mae Day and Amos Griffin Sr.

Survivors include four brothers, Phillip Griffin of Aurora, Ill., and Amos Griffin Jr., Charlie Griffin and Earl Griffin, all of Vicksburg; a sister, Helen Griffin Stewart of Chicago and Dorothy James of Vicksburg; and other relatives and friends, including Mary Bell of Vicksburg, Georgia Howard of Maywood, Ill., and Henry Griffin of Chicago.

Robert D. Hammons Sr.

BROOKHAVEN Robert D. “Teak” Hammons Sr. died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery Veterans Administration Hospital in Jackson. He was 82.

A longtime resident of Brookhaven, Mr. Hammons was a retired plumber and maintenance worker for National City Stock Yards in Illinois. He was an Army veteran of World War II, where he served as a paratrooper with the 101st Screaming Eagles and received two purple hearts.

He was a member of the VFW and Macedonia Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney Robert and Minnie Mae Case Hammons; and two brothers, Leonard Hammons and Bracey Hammons.

Survivors include his wife, Effie Hammons of Brookhaven; a son, Robert D. Hammons Jr. of Vicksburg; four daughters, Ginny Bailey and Nancy Carpenter, both of Brookhaven, Sherry Kratz of Phil Campbell, Ala., and Patricia Lynn Rushing of Marissa, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; a stepgrandchild; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Brookhaven Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Stanley L. Jones

Services for Stanley L. Jones will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Center, 1512 Main St. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Williams Funeral Service.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Friday until the service at St. Mary’s Center.

Mr. Jones died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. He was 42.

Mr. Jones was a self-employed carpenter and member of Mount Olive M.B. Church, where he was a deacon.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Julia Tubbs and his grandparents, Laura Mays and Ira Jones Sr.

Mr. Jones is survived by his father, Ira Jones Jr of Vicksburg; five brothers, Charlie Tubbs, Thomas Tubbs, Louis Jones and Ira Jones III, all of Vicksburg and Joseph Jones of Virginia; ten sisters, Linda White, Patricia Tubbs Smith, Mary Miller, Dina Buchanan, Denise Jackson, Angela Brown, Catherine Jones, Riva Jones, Lee Dora Crayton Jones, all of Vicksburg, and Laverne Gardner of Jackson; and nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends, including Minnie Ragsdale of Vicksburg.

Lester Myrick Jr.

PHILADELPHIA Lester Myrick Jr. died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at Hospice in His Hands in Madden, Miss. He was 52.

Born in Vicksburg, Mr. Myrick was a former employee of the Vicksburg Police and Vicksburg Fire departments. He was a Vietnam veteran, serving in the Air Force.

He had lived in Philadelphia for several years and was a member of Faith Tabernacle Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester Sr. and Justine Myrick.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth W. Myrick of Philadelphia; two daughters, Brandie Lee and Shellie Nettles, both of Vicksburg; a brother, Charles Myrick of Nashville; and two sisters, Doreen Beard of Carthage and Barbara Clements of Hernando.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Rev. David Richardson officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Friday until the service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Jordan Lee, Penn Clements, Randy Myrick, Antony Myrick, Chester Yates and Chuck Yates.

Honorary pallbearers will be John Lackley, Steve Lackley, Rodney Beard, Robert Hayes, John Applin, Otha Jones, Bob Woods, J.V. Sanders and Spunky Sprouse.

Willie Taylor

Services for Willie Taylor will be at noon Saturday at Travis Chapel A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Horace McKay officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. Saturday until the service at the church.

Mr. Taylor died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at his home in Vicksburg. He was 70.

Mr. Taylor was retired from GNB Battery. He was a member of Travis Chapel A.M.E. Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester Sr. and Jessie Major Taylor; three brothers, Sydney Taylor, Sylvester Taylor Jr. and Meridith “Buster” Taylor Sr.; and a sister, Eddie Taylor Johnson.

He is survived by two daughters, Monica Taylor Shorter and Tammy Taylor Young, both of Vicksburg; two sisters, Ceaser Bell Jones and Idamease Murray, both of Vicksburg; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; members of the Young, Winter, Carson, McGraw, Murphy and Miller families, all of Vicksburg; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

James Brian Tice

Services for James Brian Tice will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Sam Dunaway officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Tice died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at his home. He was 48.

Born in Winter Haven, Fla., he had lived in Vicksburg since 1976. He was a parts manager for C&S Marine in Jackson for a number of years, the president of The Hunting Club in Fayette County and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Hubert Tice.

Survivors include his mother, Margaret V. Tice of Vicksburg; two sisters, Hester T. Franck of Brandon and Susan Tice of Virginia Beach, Va.; and a niece, Tara Hooser of Norfolk, Va.

Fisher Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Randy Arnold, Claude Bourgeois, Trip Hadad, Kenny Churchill, George Scott, Jerry Scott, Greg Brou, Carlton Guedon, David Watkins and Myron Watson.
