Catherine Buckalew

HATTIESBURG Catherine Buckalew, a former Vicksburg resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at Forrest General Hospital. She was 86.

Mrs. Buckalew retired as supervisor of food services at Forrest County Jail. She was a member of Court Street United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Buckalew.

She is survived by three sons, Ted Lewis Buckalew of Petal, James Kevin Buckalew of Brandon and William Glen Buckalew of Gulfport; and six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Cemetery. Burial will follow under the direction of Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home in Hattiesburg.

Visitation will be at the cemetery Thursday from 10:30 a.m until the service.

Hilner Vivian Connor

Hilner Vivian Connor died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home. She was 96.

Mrs. Conner was born in Donaldsonville, La., to the late Hezekiah and Sarah Coleman Connor, then moved as a child with her family to Vicksburg. She graduated from Magnolia Avenue High School and attended Straight College, now Dillard University in New Orleans, where she received a bachelor of science degree in mathematics. She received a master of science degree in library science from Atlanta University, and she also studied at Fisk University, North Carolina College, Prairie View College and Louisiana State University.

She served on the faculty at Magnolia Avenue High School and was a librarian and an algebra and physics instructor at Bowman High School. She worked at Grambling College from 1950 until 1959. She retired as librarian from Rosa A. Temple High School in 1974.

She was a member of Calvary M.B. Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and served as treasurer and secretary for 25 years.

Mrs. Connor was a member of the Board of Directors at the former Jackson Street YMCA and the Warren County-Vicksburg Public Library. She was a member of the Camille Art and Literary Club and the Mississippi State and National Association of Colored Women’s clubs.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 1, the Warren County Retired Teachers Association and the Vicksburg Homecoming Benevolent Club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Clarence Joseph Connor.

Survivors include a nephew, Joseph Caldwell Connor, and a niece, Frances Busby Connor, and friends and other relatives, including LeeAnna Connor of Vicksburg and Dorothy Coleman of Tallulah.

Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Carolyn D. Evans

Services for Carolyn D. Evans will be at 11 a.m. Friday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home with the Rev. Alfred Lassiter officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Evans died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. She was 86.

Mrs. Evans was a homemaker and nurse’s assistant. She was a member of Mount Pilgrim M.B. Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Evans; her parents, Joseph and Carrie Harrison Duncan; two sisters, Louise Duncan Pierce and Eliza Duncan; and one brother, Jimmy “Buddy” Duncan.

Survivors include a stepson, Terry Evans of Inglewood, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Bobbye Gibbs of Vicksburg; one sister, Estelle Warfield of Vicksburg; 18 grandchildren, including her caregiver, Jacqueline Griffin; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Elizabeth Lee Lynch

PORT GIBSON Elizabeth Lee Lynch died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at Claiborne County Nursing Center. She was 86.

A native of Morganfield, Ky., Mrs. Lynch moved to Port Gibson in 1940. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ishamael Lynch; a daughter, Judy Marie Lynch; and a sister, Kathleen Hennington.

Survivors include two sons, Bobby Lynch of Lorman and Ray Lynch of Yazoo City; three brothers, Wicky Smith and Jimmy Smith, both of Momence, Ill., and David Smith of Port Gibson; one sister, Beatrice Jackson of Momence; and eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Glenwood Funeral Home in Port Gibson with the Rev. Don Way and Dr. Charles Gammill officiating. Burial will follow at Wintergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Wicky Lynch, Randy Lynch, Ronnie Lynch, Jacob Burnette, Lance Stewart and Aaron Stewart.

Honorary pallbearers will be Lynn Goff, Pat Bearden, Robbie Lynch, Shane Marquardt, Jason Billington, Troy Pate and the staff of Patient’s Choice Hospice.

Huel C. Moore

OAK GROVE Huel C. Moore died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at Morehouse General Hospital in Bastrop, La. He was 69.

Mr. Moore was born in Monticello, La., and was a resident of Oak Grove.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby Gertrude Moore and Lester David Moore Sr.; a daughter, Rebecca Dianne Moore; and his brother, Lester David Moore Jr.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Yvonne Moore of Oak Grove; four daughters, Mary Ann Byargeon and Betty Jean Moore, both of Bernice, La., and Linda Gail Moore and Ruby Marlene Moore, both of Farmerville, La.; two stepdaughters, June Duckworth of Delhi and Jennifer Duckworth of Oak Grove; two stepsons, Tommie Ray Duckworth of Eudora, Ark., and Wesley Steven Duckworth of Jeanerette, La.; a brother, Billy Moore of Oak Grove; four sisters, Marie Craft of Darnell, La., and Lona Griffen Kirsh, Patsy Frith and Juanita Bridges, all of Oak Grove; and eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, 10 stepgrandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Cox Funeral Home in Oak Grove with the Revs. Bill Bearden and John White officiating. Burial will follow at Epps Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Larry Darlton, Hal Waller, Ervin Hosack, Rusty Hayes, Scott Brandley and Phillip Weatherly.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dobbin Plunket and Leo Whistine.
