James O. Amos Jr.
Services for James O. “JR” Amos Jr. will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 until 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Amos died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at Covenant Health & Rehab of Vicksburg. He was 77.
Mr. Amos was retired from Chrysler Motor Co. in Detroit. He was a member of Mount Hebron Church at Freetown.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Amos; a sister, Nettie Lowe; a brother, Benjamin Amos; a daughter, Laverne Allen; and his parents, James O. Sr. and Ollie Strong Amos.
He is survived by six sons, Freddie L. Amos, John A. Amos, Jeffery Amos and Jeffery Morrison, all of Vicksburg, Luster Hill of Pittsburg, Calif., and Lloyd Amos of Detroit; eight daughters, Gloria J. Meeks of Aurora, Ill., Rita Ivy of Chicago, Shirley Gattison of Virginia Beach, Va., Sammie Perkins of Vicksburg, Tammy Hudson and Kellie Morrison, both of Clinton, and Janie L. Horton and Kathlon Grissom, both of Jackson; two sisters, Marie Evans and Ollie Mitchell, both of Detroit; and grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives, including members of the Spencer, Jones and Amos families of Vicksburg.
Lucille Phoenix Elmore
Lucille Phoenix “Cille” Elmore died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. She was 83.
A homemaker, Mrs. Elmore was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Elmore; a son, Johnny O’Neal; two daughters, Eliza O’Neal and Rose Mary O’Neal; and her parents, Charles Phoenix and Juanita Botley.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph O’Neal of San Francisco and Charles Phoenix of Columbia, S.C.; four daughters, Beatrice Thomas, Juanita O’Neal, Willie Jane Williams and Florence Kiner, all of Vicksburg; and 60 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Vernon Russell Martin Sr.
Vernon Russell Martin Sr. died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Jackson. He was 80.
Mr. Martin retired from Marathon-LeTourneau in 1988 as a mechanic. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He was also a gifted musician, known throughout the music circles in Vicksburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Littleton Russell “Lit” and Clara Martin; a son, Richard Wayne; an infant daughter, Kim Lanette; and a sister, Margaret Porter.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian L. Martin; two sons, Vernon R. Martin Jr. and wife, Cheryl, and Donald Glen Martin, all of Vicksburg; two daughters, Karen L. Martin of San Diego and Kimberly Martin-Stribling and husband, Billy, of Vicksburg; one sister, Lily Mae McDuff of Valley Park; six grandchildren, Vanessa Martin of San Diego, Nicole Williams of Jackson, Amber Martin, Jeremy Martin, Will Stribling and Carly Grace Stribling, all of Vicksburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Stanford, Billy Gene Wright, Mark Dement, Rhada Hopkins, Billy Stribling, Jimmy Winstead, Russell King and Danny Cunningham.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Brotherhood of Wayside Baptist Church, James Winstead, Bill Winstead, Billy Brooks, Neal Brooks, Ray Sanderson, Buck Wilds, Don McVan, David Daniels, Tab Buford, Russell Shiers, Brodie Sloan, Bob McDuff, James McDuff, Jerry McDuff and Kenneth McDuff.
Services will be at Glenwood Funeral Chapel Tuesday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Frances Vrieson and Rev. Greg Clements officiating. Visitation will be today from 5 until 8 p.m. at the chapel.
Abigayle Lee Stevens
Abigayle Lee Stevens died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. She was 9.
Abigayle was a lifelong resident of Vicksburg.
She is survived by her parents, Jamie and Angel Stevens; her paternal grandmother, Tamara Warnock of Vicksburg; her paternal grandfather, Ricky Stevens of Tampa, Fla.; her maternal grandparents, Tony and Karen Hubbard of Edwards; her paternal great-grandparents, Ralph and Velma Stevens of Vicksburg; and her maternal great-grandmother, Mae O’Conner of Edwards.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry White officiating. Burial will follow at Bethesda Cemetery in Hinds County.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Dwight Baker, Jerry Powell, Justin Tucker and Douglas Holder.
Honorary pallbearers will be Joel Hubbard and Rodney Hubbard.
Ruby Inez Thomas
OAK GROVE Ruby Inez “Peggy” Thomas died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at Carroll Nursing Home in Oak Grove. She was 82.
Mrs. Thomas was a lifelong resident of West Carroll Parish. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church. With her husband, she operated Fiske Union Water System for 20 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence W. and Mary Catherine Bonner; one brother, Walter Bonner; and two sisters, Odis Bonner Tyson and Amy Iola McLemore.
Survivors include her husband, Mack Thomas of Oak Grove; a son, Gary Thomas of Oak Grove; two daughters, Wanda Hill and Angie Glascock, both of Oak Grove; two sisters, Elva Davis and Hazel Dartlon, both of Oak Grove; and nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Beulah Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenny Herring officiating. Burial will follow at Beulah Cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home in Oak Grove.
Pallbearers will be Gary Don Thomas, Kyle Glascock, Greg Hill, Marshall Hill, Casey McGaha, Robin McGaha, Josh Ward and Cory Gates.
