[1/19/05]It took Vicksburg High only a few minutes Tuesday to go from being as cold as the frigid evening air at Memorial Stadium to red hot.

The Missy Gators scored three goals in the last 8 minutes of the first half, blowing open a close game and clearing the way for an easy 7-0 win over Natchez.

Seven different players scored for Vicksburg, including Holly Head who also had three assists. VHS outshot Natchez 37-0 and barely allowed the Lady Dawgs to cross midfield. Vicksburg’s keepers only had to field three balls all night.

“We were pretty well-rounded and mixed up,” Vicksburg coach Kevin Manton said. “We’re as good as we play, and we had some moments tonight where we played well and some where we didn’t.”

Despite the Missy Gators’ dominance, the game was close until their flurry late in the first half. The Division 6-5A champions took 19 shots and nearly that many passes inside the goal box before Head’s rebound goal 24 minutes into the game gave them a 1-0 lead.

With about five minutes left in the first half, Keri McGowan deflected a shot past Natchez keeper Tracy Davis to put Vicksburg ahead 2-0. The goal started a rally for VHS that saw its lead increase to 4-0 by halftime.

Tayvi Ellis scored on a 30-yard shot a minute after McGowan’s goal, and Miranda Hunt headed in a cross from Head three minutes into stoppage time for the Missy Gators’ fourth goal.

Kathy Allen, Crystal Davidson and Viktoria Case each added a goal in the second half for VHS.
