[1/27/05]William Carey had everything Brittany Fuller was looking for in a college. It was close to home, it had a softball program she was ready to be a part of and the atmosphere was great.

Most importantly, it’s small enough to avoid getting lost in.

“I like the Christian atmosphere, and I also like the small campus because I’m directionally challenged. I can’t get lost,” Fuller said with a laugh.

The selling points of the Hattiesburg school were more than enough for Fuller, who signed a letter of intent Wednesday to play softball there.

The Warren Central pitcher is 10-2 in her high school career, with a 1.38 ERA. She has 99 strikeouts and has only allowed 16 earned runs in 80 2/3 innings spread over three seasons. Her pitching caught the eye of William Carey coach Wendy Hogue.

“It was two things her knowledge of the game, and her riseball,” Hogue said. “Her riseball is going to move her into the rotation, and her knowledge of the game is going to move her up in the rotation.”

Fuller was also recruited by Belhaven and Mississippi College, and looked at a few other Mississippi schools for education. The chance to continue her softball career at a school she liked was too good to pass up, she said.

“I’m so excited. I feel like I want to scream,” she said. “It’s always been a really big dream of mine. Maybe not to play in college, but to go as far as my softball skills will take me.”
