The Vicksburg High boys’ soccer team will have to wait a little longer to play the biggest game in the program’s history.

Steady rains this week have flooded the field at Memorial Stadium, forcing the postponement of the South State championship game against Oak Grove until Thursday at 6:30. The winner will play for the state title on Saturday.

“I would say it’s 50-50,” Vicksburg coach Jason Bennett said Tuesday of his team’s chances to play tonight. “I don’t think the field is going to be any better Thursday than it is (today).”

Vicksburg girls’ coach Kevin Manton, whose team was scheduled to play at Long Beach on Tuesday for the South State title, took the precautionary step of moving his game to Thursday at 5 p.m.

Manton said keeping his players mentally ready was the driving force behind his decision.

“I didn’t want to bring my girls to school tomorrow and have them thinking we’re playing, and then not play,” said Manton, who has the Missy Gators in the state semifinals for the eighth time in 10 seasons. “We could play tomorrow, but the field will be in better shape on Thursday.”

Manton canceled practice on Tuesday, but said the Missy Gators would work on a wet field today.

It just won’t be the Memorial Stadium turf, which will likely be destroyed the next time it sees heavy use.

“I’m not going to tear up the field before the boys’ game,” Manton said.
