Jimmie Lou Applin

Services for Jimmie Lou Applin will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson with the Rev. Roy Rodger of Jackson officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home.

Mrs. Applin died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. She was 64.

Mrs. Applin was born in Delhi, La., and lived in Vicksburg for more than 22 years. She had lived in the Jackson and Byram areas for the past 20 years. She retired in 1966 from the Clorox Company in Jackson.

Mrs. Applin was a former member of Trinity Baptist Church in Vicksburg.

She was preceded in death by her father, William Burl Smith; her son, Jonathan Applin; and a brother, Wayne Smith.

Survivors include her daughter, Lora Applin of Redwood; her mother, Clara Mae Lawallin of Jackson; one sister, Cheryl Siroshton of Jackson; four brothers, James Davis, Tim Davis and Travis Smith, all of Jackson, and Albert Davis Jr. of Brandon; four grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Charlotte J. Covington

ROLLING FORK – Charlotte J. Covington died Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. She was 69.

Mrs. Covington was born in Mesidale, N.Y., and had been a resident of Rolling Fork for the past 41 years. She was a veteran of the Air Force.

She was a veterinarian assistant and attended the First Baptist Church of Rolling Fork.

She is survived by her husband, Jimmy Ray Covington of Rolling Fork; one son, Mark Douglas Covington of Rolling Fork; one daughter, Pamela Covington Hearn of Vicksburg; two sisters, Shirley Serrao of Fort Meyers, Fla., and June Babcock of Beverly Hills, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Rolling Fork with the Rev. Millard Caulder officiating. Burial will follow at Mound Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at Glenwood Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.

Pallbearers will be Robert Golitz, Peter Byrd, Jerry Stevens, Brent Rutland, Marlon Nichols and Bill Rutherford.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bert Darden, Charlie Darden and Joe Ford.

Flora Mae Floyd

Flora Mae Floyd died Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at Belmont Place. She was 77.

A lifelong resident of Vicksburg, Mrs. Floyd was the daughter of the late Arthur Sanderson and Florence and Tommy Williams. She had served as manager of Parkwood South Apartments for the past 17 years. She was a member of First Methodist Protestant Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two infant brothers and an infant sister.

Survivors include her husband, William F. Floyd of Vicksburg; a daughter, Cheryl Anne Floyd Swan of Vicksburg; two sons, Ronald William Floyd of Little Rock and Donald Franklin Floyd of Meridian; two sisters, Melda Tunnell of Pearl and Jean O’Neal of Plano, Texas; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher Funeral Home with Billy Gerald, pastor of Bear Creek Methodist Protestant Church in Utica, and Robert Andrews, pastor of First Methodist Church of Vicksburg, officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon Wednesday until the service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Raymond Sanderson, Josh Monteleone, David Browman, J.D. Brock Jr., Travis Wayne Vance, Johnny Price, Charlie Jobe, David Reid, Bernie Jobe and Mickey George.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. James Moore, Beth McDowell, Dr. Bobby Graham, Dr. Daniel Edney, Rick Greene and the staffs of Southland Management, Promise Specialty Hospital, Belmont Place, Patient’s Choice Hospice and skilled nursing and Amedysis Home Health at River Region West Campus.

Alice Carolyn Johnson

Alice Carolyn Johnson died Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at Claiborne County Nursing Home. She was 87.

A native of Mounds, Ill., Mrs. Johnson was the daughter of the late Gilbert R. and Alice Loretta Hulen Swaboda. She had lived in Vicksburg since 1950.

She was past president of the Vicksburg Junior Auxiliary, a founding member of the Pink Ladies and Candy Stripers of Mercy Hospital and a member of St. Paul Catholic Church. She had worked as a bookkeeper for John Halpin.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister and her husband, John Patrick Johnson.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia J. Berry of Indianola and Laurie E. Johnson of Vicksburg; one sister, Marie McRoy of Cairo, Ill.; one brother, Gilbert R. Swaboda Jr. of Cairo; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Patrick Farrell officiating. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Spencer Heights Cemetery in Mounds.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Jason Berry, Hays Berry, Philip Berry, Burton Doss, Steve Swaboda and Greg Swaboda.

Hugh Kearney McManus Jr.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Hugh Kearney McManus Jr. died Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, in Santa Clara, Calif. He was 72.

Mr. McManus was a graduate of Jett High School. He worked 40 years as an electronics and computer engineer for Westinghouse, Intel and Raytheon companies.

A sergeant in the Army, Mr. McManus was a veteran of the Korean War and did a tour of duty in Germany.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh Sr. and Louise McManus.

He is survived by two daughters, Debbie Kea of Stockbridge, Ga., and Shannon McManus of Kent, England; two sons, Sean McManus of Baton Rouge and Shane McManus of Los Angeles; two sisters, Betty Gray of Edwards and Carol Walker of Jackson; and one brother, George McManus of Petaluma, Calif.

There will be a memorial service Monday in Mountain View, Calif. Burial will be at San Joaquin County Military Cemetery under the direction of Lima Funeral Home in Santa Clara.

Ola Wallace Valentine

OMAHA – Ola “BB” Wallace Valentine, formerly of Vicksburg, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. She was 39.

Mrs. Valentine was preceded in death by her father, Henson Wallace; and her grandparents, John Wesley and Annie Bell Burden.

Survivors include her husband, James Valentine of Vicksburg; her mother and stepfather, Geneva and Charlie McGowan; one brother, James Wallace of Sioux City, Iowa; six sisters, Annie Bell Burden of Portland, Ore., Shirley Burden Smith of Sioux City and Sarah Patel, Darlene Wallace, Doreen Wallace and Tamara Wallace, all of Vicksburg; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, including members of the Burden, Smith and Wallace families of Vicksburg.
