Without its top pitcher, the St. Aloysius Lady Flashes were no match for 5A power Warren Central in the final game of a three-team round robin at Bazinsky Park.
The Lady Vikes completed a 2-0 day by ripping St. Al 11-0. WC had earlier beaten Ridgeland 8-1.
The day wasn’t a total loss for St. Al (1-1) who rallied in the bottom of the seventh to beat Ridgeland 8-7 in the first game.
WC coach Lucy Young was elated to get the fast-pitch season off to a strong start.
“What a great opening day. Lauren Anderson gives up just a run and that was unearned in the first game, and then against St. Al, we’re able to play everyone who wasn’t injured or sick,” Young said. “I thought we hit the ball well against four different pitchers. We made good adjustments at the plate.”
St. Al coach Gene Rogilio wished his team could’ve competed better.
“We made way too many mental mistakes in the second game,” he said. “It’s true not having Sarah (Kerut) on the mound affected us, but I really think we missed her leadership more.”
Kerut was unavailable to play because she is still playing basketball for the Lady Flashes, who qualified Thursday night for the 1A playoffs.”
The Lady Vikes were able to go with backup pitcher Brittany Fuller and she responded with a one-hit shutout. She struck out nine and issued no walks.
The lone St. Al hit came in the final at bat when Kelsey Thompson beat out an infield ball to short.
WC built a comfortable 10-0 lead after two innings and then liberally subbed in from there.
Anna Miller had a two-run double to highlight a five-run first. Brittany Fuller and Andi Hearn had RBI doubles in the second to key a second, five-run at bat.
The Lady Vikes finished with just five hits but they reached base 13 other times off 11 walks, a hit batter and a fielders choice.
Catelyn Park took the loss.
WC 8, Ridgeland 1
Anderson tossed a two-hitter to lead the Lady Vikes past visiting Ridgeland.
Anderson struck out three and walked one.
After taking a 4-0 lead, WC blew it open with a four-run fourth.
Fuller led the Lady Vikes with three hits, including two doubles. Anderson had a double while Anna Jones had two singles.
St. Al 8, Ridgeland 7
Catelyn Park’s bunt hit in the bottom of the seventh scored Hannah Hales with the winning run in St. Al’s come-from-behind win over Ridgeland.
The Lady Flashes trailed 7-6 going into their final at bat. Ashley Magee and Carrie Hattaway started the at bat with singles, St. Al’s first two hits of the game.
St. Al was able to score its first six runs by virtue of 10 Ridgeland walks.
Sarah Franco allowed only four hits to pick up the win.
