A Vicksburg woman who died in a three-car collision on Fisher Ferry Road Sunday afternoon was remembered Monday as an “outgoing” and “interesting” local school teacher for more than 30 years.

Georgia M. Brown, 56, 1606 Martin Luther King Drive, had retired in 2002 from Warren Central Junior High School, where she taught seventh-grade science for 30 years. She since had been teaching at McCall High School in Tallulah.

Ms. Brown was a passenger in a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by her daughter, Sharon Allen, 33, who lived with her mother. Allen and another driver, Joseph Alexander Halinski, 15, 4849 Fisher Ferry Road, remained hospitalized this morning.

The third driver, George Mason Jr., 46, 2380 Freetown Road, was not injured.

Sheriff Martin Pace said the investigation into the wreck two miles south of the city limits has not been completed because Halinski and Allen have not yet been interviewed.

Allen was listed in good condition this morning at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and Halinski was in good condition at River Region Medical Center’s intensive care unit, hospital spokesmen said.

The wreck was reported at 4:20 Sunday in the 1300 block of Fisher Ferry.

At Warren Central Junior High Monday, the mood was somber. Ms. Brown had planned to be at the school for lunch with former colleagues because students were not in class due to Presidents Day.

“Even when you retire from here, you’re still a part of our family,” said principal Pam Wilbanks, who had known Ms. Brown for 25 years.

“She was involved in a lot of things. This is a real loss to the community,” Wilbanks said.

Fellow teacher Betty Jones had known Ms. Brown since they were students at Rosa A. Temple High School. After graduating in 1962, they were roommates at Alcorn State University.

Jones described her friend as “upbeat, which made for a good teacher.”

“She was very outgoing, which made her classes interesting to the students,” Jones said.

Ms. Brown was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church and active in the Vicksburg Alcorn State alumni chapter.

McCall High School was closed Monday, and no school personnel could be reached for comment.

Ms. Brown’s body will be released to Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home, deputy coroner Larry Chisley said.
