George Culkin
George Culkin died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at his home. He was 78.
A lifelong resident of Warren County, Mr. Culkin was the son of the late Lawrence and Ollie Hearn Culkin. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, W.H. Stevens Masonic Lodge, Wahabi Shrine Temple and Faith Chapter of the Eastern Star.
He was a professional wrestler and promoter for a number of years. From 1960 until 1968, he served as chief deputy sheriff under the late J.H. Henderson and Vernon O. Luckett.
Mr. Culkin worked in the chancery clerk’s office for the late J.L. “Pewee” Hudgins and was a Warren County election commissioner. In 1973, he was elected circuit clerk of Warren County, retiring in 1988.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda Culkin; four brothers, Mike Culkin, Harvey Curtis, Harry Curtis and Jack Curtis Sr.; and one sister, Estelle Whittington.
He is survived by one daughter, Sue Ellen Rives of Cleveland; one son, Gil Culkin of Vicksburg; a sister, Lillian Duerbusch of St. Louis, Mo.; a brother, Melvin Curtis of Mobile, Ala.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Bryant, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. Monday until the service at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Phillip Irwin, John Crevitt, Sonny Keen, Bobby Raines, Jack Curtis Jr. and Tommy Curtis.
Honorary pallbearers will be Leonard Rowse, Jack Hollingsworth, Elmo Ellis, Willie Harrell, Hugh Logue, Bill Curtis, Nat Hovious, James Tart, Jimmy Clark, Russell Barnes, Craig Mayer and John Mayer.

George William Compton
OAK GROVE – George William Compton died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, at West Carroll Memorial Hospital. He was 90.
Mr. Compton lived most of his life in Oak Grove before moving to Eudora, Ark.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Irene Jemerson Compton; two brothers; one sister; five grandchildren; and a wife, Rosine Trichell Compton.
Survivors include his wife, Pearle West of Eudora; nine daughters, Eunice “Tootsy” Griffith, Charlene Brooks and Willie Hooks, all of Kilbourne, Eddie Bea Johnson of Kingston, Ark., Earlene Stanfield of Malakoff, Texas, Minnie Griffis of Kermit, Texas, Patsy Bayne of Ruston, La., Dian Weaver of Eudora and Emily Powell of Chickasha, Okla.; a stepdaughter, Francis Blansett of Ponotopor, Miss.; two sons, Edward “Brother” Compton of Eudora and Billy Compton of Kermit; two stepsons, Johnny Pennington of Eudora and James Pennington of Missouri; three sisters, Dolly Hammer and Laura Costello, both of Longview, Texas, and Nora Layton of Kilbourne; three brothers, R.H. “Tim Compton and J.E. Compton, both of Oak Grove, and Junior Compton of Kermit; and 37 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Cox Funeral Home in Oak Grove with the Rev. Kenneth Watt officiating. Burial will follow at Kilbourne Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until 10 tonight at the funeral home.
Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
Henry Alvin Jolly
NEWELLTON – Services for Henry Alvin Jolly will be at 2 p.m. today at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home in Tallulah with the Rev. Ricky Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Legion Cemetery.
Mr. Jolly died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, at his home. He was 73.
Mr. Jolly was born in Newellton. He was a farmer and a lifelong resident of Tensas Parish. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Myrtle Marie Hall.
He is survived by two brothers, Joe Everett Jolly Jr. and Bobby Wayne Jolly, both of Newellton; and nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Ronald Jolly, Sammy Pitts, Michael Holifield, Jonathan Jolly, Paul Freeman and Williams Ragsdale.
James Scott
James “Sonny Dip” Scott died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. He was 66.
Mr. Scott was preceded in death by his parents, Stan and Lillie Griffin Scott, and a sister, Ossie Mae Kearney.
He is survived by his wife, Lizzie Mae Lewis of Vicksburg; three stepdaughters, Doris Lewis, Jacqueline Lewis and Ledora Saints, all of Vicksburg; and four sisters, Rosie Wallace, Alberta Selmon and Sarah Robinson, all of Vicksburg, and Leola Moore of Aurora, Ill.
W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Albert Lee Shingler
Services for Albert Lee Shingler will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Fisher Funeral Home with Drs. Matt Buckles and John G. McCall officiating, assisted by Drs. Gordon Sansing and James Hess. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Shingler died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at his home. He was 77.
A lifelong resident of Vicksburg, Mr. Shingler was the son of the late Percy T. and Ida Smith Shingler. He was a retired butcher, working 19 years at Black’s Store before moving to Sunflower and retiring from A&P. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he was in the Boaz Sunday school class.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine P. Shingler of Vicksburg; one daughter, Barbara Lee Nixon of Vicksburg; one son, John Hampton Shingler of Germany; three sisters, Laura Hester, Martha Redding and Margaret Barnes, all of Vicksburg; two brothers, Charles Shingler of West Monroe and Ronald Shingler of Vicksburg; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and other relatives.
Pallbearers will be T.J. Nixon, Lawrence Ray, Joe Terry, Tommy Terry, Mike Terry and James Terry.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Boaz Sunday school class at First Baptist Church.

Zane Stewart
Zane Stewart died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, in Kingwood, Texas. He was 75.
Mr. Stewart was a former resident of Vicksburg and Slidell, La. He was born in Isola to Bessie and Ike Stewart. He graduated in 1948 from Isola High School and worked for Koestler Bakery before joining the Navy in 1951.
He served four years in the Korean Conflict and was discharged in 1955.
He worked for 32 years as a radio operator and engineering technician with the Corps of Engineers. He was also a graduate of Southern Business College.
He was a member of Gibson Memorial United Methodist Church for almost 40 years, serving on the administrative board and trustees board. He later joined Hawkins United Methodist Church, where he was a trustee.
Mr. Stewart was on the Board of Directors at Lake Claiborne and volunteered at Mutual Credit Union, serving on the credit committee for 12 years and the administrative board for nine years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary A. “Bo” Stewart; a sister, Mamie Walton; and a brother, Aubrey Stewart.
Survivors include a daughter, Tami Newett of Plantation, Fla.; a son, J. Nash Stewart of Kingwood; five sisters, Esther Rivers of Niceville, Fla., Mable Hitchcock of Port Gibson, Eloise Dupuy of Inverness, Pat Stewart of Albuquerque, N.M., and Donnie Stewart of Rio Rancho, N.M.; and four grandchildren.
Fisher Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Yvonne Case Varnado
TALLULAH – Yvonne Case Varnado died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, at Madison Parish Hospital in Tallulah. She was 78.
Born in Brookhaven, Mrs. Varnado had lived in Tallulah for 43 years. She was a retired store manager and was a member of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Cindy Yvonne Holloway of Clinton; one sister, Myrtle Parsons of Memphis; one brother, Alton Case of Natchez; two grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends, including Betty Neuman of Tallulah.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home in Tallulah with John Rushing officiating. Burial will be at Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery in Caseyville, Miss.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the funeral home.
L.V. Williamson
OAK GROVE – L.V. Williamson died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at Winn Parish Medical Center in Winnfield, La. He was 84.
Mr. Williamson was born in Seminary, Miss. He was a longtime resident of Oak Grove before moving to Winnfield.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Lemiel Williamson; his mother, Eunice Allen Williamson; and a sister, Ruby Williamson.
He is survived by his wife, Marcia Everett Williamson; a daughter, Dianne Poisso; a stepson, Gordon Promeaux; two brothers, Marvin Williamson and Edward Williamson; two sisters, Winnie Forbush and Iona Bennon; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Cox Funeral Home in Oak Grove with the Rev. Mike Howard officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Dan Roper, Calvin Allen, Burnis Allen, Charles Allen, Jerry Hughes and Jimmy Miller.
Honorary pallbearers will be John Roper and B.C. Sowell.
