Wells powers VHS past McComb, 10-1|[2/26/05]

Tyler Wells homered, doubled and drove in three runs, and John Hendrix and Stanton Price combined on a four-hitter as Vicksburg High beat McComb 10-1 in the Mid-Misssippi Classic on Friday at Northwest Rankin.

Jordan Henry also had two hits and two RBIs for the Gators (4-1), who blew the game open with five runs in the top of the fourth. The rally gave Vicksburg a 10-1 lead.

Hendrix earned the win with three innings of two-hit ball. Price came on in relief in the fourth and went the rest of the way, striking out six while allowing only two hits and one walk.

Price also helped the Gators’ cause with an RBI double, and Gerald Mims added another RBI double for Vicksburg, which will play Meridian today at 11 a.m. at Brandon.

Alonzo Harris accounted for McComb’s only run with a solo homer leading off the bottom of the first.

Dontrell Sargent also had two hits for the Tigers (1-4).

WC 15, Yazoo City 0

Nick Carson’s two-run triple keyed a nine-run first inning for Warren Central, and the Vikings went on to rout Yazoo City in a four-inning contest at Pearl High School.

Josh Gordon, Kyle Calhoun and Ryan Grey all had doubles for WC, while Zach Balthrop and Will Mendrop each had two hits and two RBIs.

Drew Warnock (1-0) earned the victory by allowing two hits in four scoreless innings. He struck out four.

On Thursday, WC crushed McComb 13-1 in the Mid-Mississippi Classic opener.

Carson went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, Ben Koestler had two doubles and two RBIs, and Ryan Grey homered, doubled and knocked in two runs while going 3-for-3.

Eric Douglas added a single, two RBIs and scored three runs for the Vikings.

Balthrop also had a double and earned the win on the mound to improve to 1-1.

WC (4-1) will play at Brandon today at 1:30 p.m. in the finale of the Mid-Mississippi Classic.
