West Ouachita came across the state line from Louisiana to smack Warren Central 8-4 Tuesday night at Viking Field.

The Chiefs (2-2) got a big game from third baseman Devin Copely, who drove in four runs off a double and a home run.

The Vikings, now 5-2, had a chance to get even during the middle innings but stranded three runners in scoring position. West Ouachita pulled away, scoring three times in the sixth to build a 7-2 lead.

WC coach Randy Broome was disappointed in his team’s focus against such a respected power in West Ouachita.

“They can definitely swing it, but we just didn’t show up,” Broome said. “The frustrating part was us not stepping up to the challenge.

“I think we’ve got a real good ballclub, but it’s time for us to start showing it. We made four errors tonight, including that play where we let a guy run around the bases.”

That play came in the Chiefs’ sixth following a hit and two errors and turned a 5-2 game into a commanding 7-2 lead. Copely’s solo home run off WC reliever Josh Gordon led off the Chiefs’ sixth.

West Ouachita scored three runs in its first at bat off WC starter Zach Balthrop. Copely had a two-run double to key the at-bat.

The Vikings managed only one run and one hit through four innings against starter Andrew Auttonberry. They had two in scoring position in the fourth, but Auttonberry got Cody Ferguson to ground out and Drew Warnock to fly out to center, to end the threat.

WC did get a triple from Balthrop in the sixth to make it 4-2.

Down 7-2, WC got a run from Gordon who scored on a fielder’s choice by Will Mendrop.

Both teams scored a run in the seventh. Casey Anderson had an RBI double for the Chiefs to make it 8-3. WC closed its batting with Ryan Grey singling in Ben Koestler who had reached on a leadoff double.

West Ouachita finished with nine hits against four Viking pitchers. Balthrop took the loss.

Auttonberry went five innings for the win. Copely pitched the last two for the save.

Warren Central is scheduled to play at Clinton on Friday.

Madison Central took advantage of eight Vicksburg errors and had only five hits. Stefan Gibbs took the loss. He pitched five innings, allowing five runs while giving up only one hit.

The Gators are scheduled to play Lafayette County on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Bazinsky Field.
