Jordan Henry’s quick 6-0, 6-0 victory over Nick Melby set the tone for the rest of the match Thursday as Vicksburg overpowered the young Warren Central team, three matches to two.

“Jordan is playing well now,” VHS coach Kevin Manton said. “There wasn’t much pressure on him today. He’s just got to keep working on his strokes.”

Henry, whose tennis career plays second fiddle to baseball, made it to only his third practice of the season Wednesday. Thursday’s match might be the last time he touches the court before next week’s showdown with Madison Central.

“(The win) gives me confidence going into next week,” Henry said. “It’s a big match, but there’s not too much pressure. I’ll just try to give him the best match I can.”

The Gators boys’ doubles team of Willie Brown and Jordan McBride beat WC’s Steven Faulk and Tyler Wing 6-4, 6-1, and VHS’ Angelique Moffet beat Caitlin Shelton 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in the girls’ singles match.

WC’s two wins came in doubles – Mary Claire Scurria and Caroline Schluter beat Laura Katherine Johnston and Catherine Figueroa in the girls’ match, and Seth Hudspeth and Kerrie-Taylor Leech overpowered Coleman Morrison and Whitney Saxon 6-3, 6-2 in mixed doubles.

“Our whole team is young this year,” WC coach Rick Shields said. “I expected us to play a little better, but I think some of the players underestimated what they were up against. They might have played timid a little bit, but Vicksburg has a good team.”
