Walter Lawrence Carter Sr.

Walter Lawrence “Bud” Carter Sr. died Sunday, March 27, 2005, at River Region West Campus. He was 80.

Born in Arcola, Mr. Carter retired as a truck driver from Runyon Construction Co. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy. He was a member of Travelers Rest M.B. Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Randell G. Carter Sr. and Bessie B. Carter; his wife, Vivian A. Carter; one daughter, Helen Carter Palmer; a brother, Randell “R.G.” Carter Jr.; and three sisters, Dorothy Carter, Mary Carter and Pearl Carter.

Survivors include two sons, Walter L. Carter Jr. of Atlanta and Gary M. Carter of Vicksburg; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Clemmie Higdon Chauncy

DELHI – Clemmie Higdon Chauncy died Saturday, March 26, 2005, at Richland Parish Hospital in Delhi. She was 97.

Born in Urania, La., Mrs. Chauncy was a resident of Delhi.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Sydney Higdon and Ollie Chauncy; her parents, Robert and Addie Scroggins Chisholm; a daughter, Addie Jewel Herford; and a grandson, Rickey D. Higdon.

She is survived by a son, Tracy Higdon of Delhi; a daughter, Betty Ruth Hurley of Rogers, Ark.; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cox Funeral Home in Delhi with the Rev. Pat Loftin and Wilford Burgess officiating. Burial will follow at Lamar Cemetery in Delhi.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Charles Pepper, Pliny Pennebaker, Roger Ward, Dallas Jones, Allen Ogden and Justin Higdon.

Charles Ernest Davenport

Charles Ernest Davenport died Friday, March 25, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. He was 56.

Mr. Davenport was born in Utica and had lived in Vicksburg more than 20 years. He was a retired heavy-equipment operator and welder.

He was a member of Greater Grove Street Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Annabell Davenport and J.C. Russell.

He is survived by his wife, Evangelist Bertha Davenport of Vicksburg; two sons, Anthony Calvin of Vicksburg and Cleavonn Caston of Jackson; one daughter, Sheena Caston of Utica; four stepsons, Roderick Ringo, RaMond Ringo and Reginald Johnson, all of Vicksburg, and the Rev. Romero Ringo of Killeen, Texas; eight grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Touphie G. Habeeb

Services for Touphie G. Habeeb will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church with the Very Rev. John Morris, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Riles Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the funeral home with Trisagion prayers at 7.

Mr. Habeeb died Friday, March 25, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. He was 90.

Mr. Habeeb was a 1933 graduate of Carr Central High School and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He was a member of the family grocery business until 1965. He retired from the Waterways Experiment Station Environmental Laboratory in 1989.

He was a lifelong member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church and the Men of the Church.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, William Habeeb, Phillip Habeeb and Shouphie Habeeb, and a sister, Maggie Habeeb Abraham.

He is survived by his wife, Mable Fulton Habeeb; two daughters, Ann Habeeb of Vicksburg and Pam Boozer and her husband, Michael, of Diamondhead; one son, Alex Habeeb and his wife, Kate, of Madison; two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Sarah Boozer of Diamondhead; one sister, Waddad Buttross of Natchez; one brother, Dr. Alfred H. Habeeb of Birmingham, Ala.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Gregory Thomas, Joe Stradinger, Dr. Alfred Habeeb Jr., Luke Abney, Doug Panzone and his children, Ann, Pam and Alex.

Honorary pallbearers will be Peter Buttross Jr., Phillip Habeeb, Dr. Mark Habeeb, Chuck Abraham, David Abraham, Charles Abraham, Lee Thomas Jr., Alex Stradinger, Billy McDaniels and Vernon Fulton.

Norman V. Robinson

Norman V. Robinson died Saturday, March 26, 2005, at his home. He was 80.

A native of Laurel, Mr. Robinson was a Louisiana resident before moving to Vicksburg in 1935. He was the son of the late Grover and Vinney Stringe Robinson.

A carpenter, he retired in 1982 from Big River Shipbuilders. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Alene Dexter Sharp and Evelyn Hill; one brother, Haskel Robinson; a stepbrother, Billy Ray Robinson; one son, Wayne Robinson; and his wife, Annie Robinson.

Survivors include three daughters, Patricia Ingram and April Gray, both of Vicksburg, and Dorothy Wicker of Tallulah; one son, Roy Robinson of Vicksburg; two sisters, Doris Davis and Helen Sink, both of Vicksburg; one brother, Charles Robinson of Springfield, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Brumfield officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be J.R. Robinson, Jimmy Wicker, Jason Wicker, Keith Martin, Ricky Smith, Ronnie Ingram and Perry Boyd.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dewey Owsley Jr., Mike Franco, Fred Wells and George Wells.

Leon Thomas Jr.

Leon Thomas Jr., formerly of Vicksburg, died Saturday, March 26, 2005, in Jackson. He was 41.

Mr. Thomas graduated from Warren Central High School and was a military veteran. He was a deacon at Welcome Baptist Church in Utica.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Thomas, and his grandmothers, Sylvia Thomas and Maggie Thomas.

He is survived by his wife, Mattie Thomas of Jackson; a daughter, Alyssia Thomas of Jackson; his parents, Leon and Cellastine Thomas of Vicksburg; one sister, Veronica Thomas of Vicksburg; five brothers, Robert Thomas and Charles Thomas, both of Vicksburg, David Thomas of Baton Rouge, Reginald Thomas of Las Vegas and Joe Thomas of Peoria, Ill.; and other relatives.

Arrangements are incomplete under the direction of West Haven Memorial Funeral Home.

Faye Welch

TALLULAH – Faye Welch died Sunday, March 27, 2005, at her home in Tallulah. She was 72.

Mrs. Welch was born in Kosciusko and had lived in Tallulah for 47 years. She was a retired waitress and sales clerk. She was a member of Parkview Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Jimmy W. Kelley of Brandon and Robert Miracle of Tallulah; two daughters, Shela Hutson and Cynthia L. Welch, both of Tallulah; one brother, Elmer H. Kelley of Bastrop, La.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Parkview Baptist Church with the Rev. Cletus Moak and Jonathan Heath Kelley officiating. Burial will follow at Silver Cross Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Hutson, Chris Hutson, Brandon Welch, Ernie Kelley, Scott Johnson and Clint Johnson.
