Some midseason adjustments helped Vicksburg stay competitive for a while, but it was not enough to stave off another double-digit loss.
Pearl erupted for nine runs off nine hits during the middle three innings to beat VHS 10-0 Tuesday at Bazinsky Field.
The Lady Pirates (9-7) added a run in the sixth and then shut down the Missy Gators (2-12) in the bottom half of the inning to end the game by the 10-run rule.
The bright spot for the Missy Gators was new leadoff hitter Courtney Prentiss, who had two sharp hits in her first two at bats.
“We made some adjustments coming off our past performances and that was to move our best hitters to the top to try and score some runs,” VHS coach Kori Crutchfield said.
It nearly worked in the first and fifth innings against Pearl. Prentiss reached third on her first at bat, getting on with a hit to right and then stealing second. But Pearl pitcher Erica Nichols induced a fielder’s choice for the third out, leaving Prentiss stranded on third.
Then in the fifth, down 9-0, Prentiss tried to score following Heather Shelby’s hit to left. A quick throw home, however, got her out at the plate.
Pearl broke a 0-0 tie in the third with two runs off singles from Cindy Lott and Nichols. They busted loose in the fourth with five runs which included a two-run single from Nichols and a two-run double from Samantha Wade.
Pearl finished with 11 hits as Lott, Nichols, Wade and Sachia Roan had two hits each.
WC earns forfeit wins over Natchez
Natchez High forfeited both games of a scheduled doubleheader on Tuesday, giving the victories to Warren Central because of a lack of players. The Lady Vikes improved to 3-0 in the division and can win the outright division championship with a victory over Vicksburg on Thursday.
