Walter Lawrence Carter Sr.

Services for Walter Lawrence “Bud” Carter Sr. will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Travelers Rest Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas E. Bernard officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 until 8 p.m. Friday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home and Saturday at the church from 10 a.m. until the service.

Mr. Carter died Sunday, March 27, 2005, at River Region West Campus. He was 80.

Mr. Carter retired as a truck driver from Runyon Construction Co. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy. He was a member of Travelers Rest M.B. Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Randell G. Carter Sr. and Bessie B. Carter; his wife, Vivian Earl Carter; one daughter, Helen Carter Palmer; a brother, Randell “R.G.” Carter Jr.; and three sisters, Dorothy Carter, Mary Carter and Pearl Carter.

Survivors include two sons, Walter L. Carter Jr. of Atlanta and Gary M. Carter of Vicksburg; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, including members of the Garland, Collins, Field, Earl and Carter families.

Charles Ernest Davenport

Services for Charles Ernest Davenport will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Vicksburg City Auditorium with the Rev. Casey Fisher officiating. Burial will follow at Rohelia Church Cemetery in Utica.

Visitation will be from 1 until 7 p.m. Friday at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home.

Mr. Davenport died Friday, March 25, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. He was 56.

Mr. Davenport was born in Utica and had lived in Vicksburg more than 20 years. He was a retired heavy-equipment operator and welder.

He was a member of Greater Grove Street Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Annabell Davenport and J.C. Russell.

He is survived by his wife, Evangelist Bertha Davenport of Vicksburg; two sons, Anthony Calvin of Vicksburg and Cleavonn Caston of Jackson; one daughter, Sheena Caston of Utica; four stepsons, Roderick Ringo, RaMond Ringo and Reginald Johnson, all of Vicksburg, and the Rev. Romero Ringo of Killeen, Texas; eight grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Retta Gandy

TALLULAH – Retta Gandy died Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. She was 55.

A lifelong resident of Tallulah, Miss Gandy was a member of Tallulah Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her mother, Roberta Sevier “Beta” Gandy of Tallulah, cousins and other relatives.

Services will be at 3 today at Tallulah Presbyterian Church with Dr. William S. Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Silver Cross Cemetery under the direction of Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 2 today until the service at the church.

Pallbearers will be Jim Tucker, Tommy Bishop, Dr. Conrad Sevier, Rufus Yerger Jr., Tom Gandy, Paul Mayronne, Trey Tucker and Boyd Kitchen.

Jean Lagrone Griffin

Jean Lagrone Griffin died Wednesday, March 23, 2005, in Galveston, Texas, after a long illness. She was 78.

Mrs. Griffin was the wife of P.C. Griffin (1924-1996). She is survived by one son, Mark Clifton Griffin.

Jean Griffin was the daughter of Wade H. Lagrone Sr. (1898-1961) and Lucile Lagrone (1899-1980), both long term residents of Vicksburg.

Mrs. Griffin had two siblings. Her sister, Constance Blankenship, and her brother, Wade H. Lagrone Jr. grew up with her in Vicksburg, where they were all born. Mrs. Griffin was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having survived her parents and her brother and sister.

She is survived, in addition to her son, by her sister-in-law, Eugenia Lagrone of Tupelo, and nieces, Susan Watson, Lewis Lagrone, Constance Hartmann, and nephews, Steven Blankenship, Wesley Lagrone and Wade Lagrone III.

Mrs. Griffin worked for many years as a paralegal specialist for the Mississippi River Commission in Vicksburg. Before that she held jobs with Westinghouse and the former Sinclair Oil Company. As a young woman, Jean was active in the Vicksburg Little Theatre company and appeared in many productions. Years later she directed a play for the same organization. She loved music and theater productions, and was a fan of classic cinema. In her later years, she became interested in gourmet cooking.

Jean Griffin moved to Kenner, La., in the late 1990s and to Galveston in September of 2004. From February to March of 2005, she was a resident of the Turner Geriatric Center in Galveston, where she was under skilled hospice care prior to her death from cancer. She died peacefully in the presence of her son Mark and his wife, Deborah, last week at the Turner Center.

Visitation will be held at Fisher Funeral Home on Cherry Street in Vicksburg on April 1, 2005, beginning at 11:30 a.m. A memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. at the family cemetery plot in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg. Friends of the family are welcome to attend.

Mary G. Hill

Services for Mary G. “Mom Mae” Hill will be at noon Saturday at Zion Chapel Church of God in Christ in Bolton. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 until 7 p.m. Friday at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hill died Monday, March 28, 2005, at Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. She was 87.

Mrs. Hill was preceded in death by her parents, Deuce Green and Leanna Powell Smith; and two brothers, Tommy Green and Jessie Green.

Survivors include two daughters, Roberta Currie and Ethel Lee Bryant, both of Vicksburg; one sister, Mary Lee Powell of Bolton; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends, including Linda Clark.

Gladys M. Marsh

Gladys M. Marsh died Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at Heritage House. She was 94.

A housewife and lifelong resident of Vicksburg, Mrs. Marsh was the daughter of John and Mable Yarbrough McIntyre. She was a member of Bowmar Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Benjamin Marsh; a daughter, Shirley Marsh; a brother, George McIntyre; and a sister, Alice Guiney.

She is survived by two nieces, Charlene Bullock of Brandon and Rosemary Steen of Vicksburg, and other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Yokena Cemetery with the Rev. Terry White, pastor of Bowmar Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be W.C. Carlisle, Billy Gene Wright, Franklin Wright, J.W. Wright, William Bullock and Leo Steen.

Doyle G. Morrison

RAYMOND – Doyle G. Morrison died Monday, March 28, 2005, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Jackson. He was 71.

Mr. Morrison was a native of Utica. He was retired from the Air Force and had made his home in Jones County and Raymond for the past 10 years.

He was a member of Mill Creek Congregational Methodist Church in Laurel.

Mr. Morrison was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Morrison, and a son, Stanley Ray Morrison.

He is survived by his wife, Sue G. Morrison of Raymond; two sons, Larry Morrison of Las Vegas and Tony Morrison of Indiana; three stepsons, Marshall Jones and James Jones, both of Laurel, and Robert Jones of Gulfport; three brothers, Wade Morrison of Jackson, Robert Morrison of Utica and Jimmy Morrison of Hazlehurst; two sisters, Myrna French of Natchez and Elizabeth Ashley of Hazlehurst; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Glenwood Funeral Home in Utica with the Rev. Bill Myers officiating. Burial will follow at Salem Cemetery in Learned.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Betty Louise Price Reddix

Services for Betty Louise Price Reddix will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Baptist Church in Bovina with the Rev. Tyrone Dixon officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Friday at Robbins Funeral Home and Saturday at the church from 9 a.m. until the service.

Mrs. Reddix died Monday, March 28, 2005, at Kenner Regional Medical Center in Kenner, La. She was 59.

A Vicksburg resident, Mrs. Reddix retired from teaching in the Warren County Schools. She was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church in Bovina and New Hope Ministries in LaPlace, La.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Price and Rosa Louise Price; a son, Gary Allen Reddix; one sister, Lillie Mae Price Pickens; and two brothers, William Price Jr. and Albert Price.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Reddix Jr. of Temple, Texas, and Rodney Reddix of LaPlace; a sister, Erma Belton of Jackson; four brothers, Willie Price and Theodore Price, both of Vicksburg, Joe Price of Chicago and George Price of Shreveport, La.; four grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
