Melva Buchanan

Melva Theresa “Melva T” Johnson Buchanan died Saturday, April 2, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. She was 46.

Mrs. Buchanan was a member of Mercy Seat M.B. Church and attended Mount Zion Baptist Church and Faith Christian Church. She was a retired Social Security claim representative.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Buchanan Jr.; her father, Henry Holly; grandparents, Willie Johnson and Theresa Lacey; and a granddaughter, Alexia T. Johnson.

Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Verna and Louis Davis of Vicksburg; a son, Albert Buchanan III of Vicksburg; two daughters, Autumn Johnson of San Diego and Amber Buchanan of Vicksburg; a brother, Edwin Johnson of Vicksburg; and three grandchildren.

Arrangements are incomplete with Williams Funeral Service.

Ernest Burks

Ernest Burks died Saturday, April 2, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. He was 76.

Mr. Burks was retired from Matthews Auto Parts. He was a World War II veteran.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Burks and Elzena Casell; a brother, Eddie Tom Burks; and a son, Eleon Banks.

Survivors include a son, Edwin E. Burks of New Orleans, two grandchildren and two nephews.

Cosper Lee Tullos

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Cosper Lee Tullos, a former resident of Vicksburg, died Thursday, March 31, 2005, in Altamonte Springs, Fla. He was 89.

Mr. Tullos graduated from Mississippi State University in 1943. He joined the Soil Conservation Service as a soil scientist in 1944. In 1950, he became district conservationist for the Warren County Soil and Water Conservation District. In 1966, Mr. Tullos joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District as a conservation agronomist. He became a management agronomist in 1979 and held that position until he retired and moved to Florida.

Mr. Tullos was a Baptist and a member of the American Society of Agronomy, Kiwanis Club and Elks. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Rilla Tullos of Altamonte Springs.; two daughters, Ginger Torner of Lake Mary, Fla., and Judy Lawrence of Australia; a son, Cosper Lee Tullos Jr. of Palmetto, Fla.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the McClain-Hayes Funeral Home in Philadelphia.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the service.
