St. Aloysius bounced back into the playoff picture with a double-header sweep of Wesson Monday at Bazinsky Field.
The Lady Flashes whipped the Cobras 16-1 and 11-0. The first game went just three innings and the second lasted five, both ending by the mercy rule.
The victories solidified St. Al’s hold on third place behind Salem and Loyd Star in Division 7-1A.
“We’re still in a bind because we’re behind in the tie-breaker with both Salem and Loyd Star. We need to win out,” said St. Al coach Gene Rogilio, whose team improved to 5-2 in the division and 10-6 overall.
Wesson struggled on the mound, issuing 18 walks in the first game alone. They allowed nine more in the second game.
“We know they are struggling, but we were playing to win because it was a division game. That’s why we went with a good bunt hit just to get the game over with,” Rogilio said.
The bunt single came off the bat of Sarah Franco and it was enough to score Ashley Magee to end the game by the 15-run rule.
The Lady Flashes had just three hits, but 21 batters reached thanks to the 18 walks. Catelyn Park and Sarah Kerut each scored three times. Mary Myers Franco had a three-run double to key a seven-run second inning.
Kerut got the win and allowed just two hits, including a double by Wesson’s Bethany Dykes.
Wesson played better in the second game and it was scoreless until St. Al scored eight times in the bottom of the third inning.
Kerut led a six-hit attack by going 3-for-3. Franco scored three runs.
Franco was also the winning pitcher, allowing just one hit, a fifth inning single by Wesson’s Monica Garcia. Franco struck out six.
Cleveland 2, WC 0
Warren Central started a tough week with a tough loss.
Cleveland scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat the Lady Vikes and spoil a solid pitching performance by Lauren Anderson.
Anderson allowed only four hits, no walks and struck out four in seven innings. The Lady Vikes (14-4) managed only two hits in support of her though, and left a half-dozen runners on base in taking their first loss since March 1.
“Our bats were just cold. We could never link anything together,” WC coach Lucy Young said. “Anybody we got on base, we didn’t get any hits to advance those runners.”
It doesn’t get easier for the Lady Vikes the rest of the week.
They host Northwest Rankin today, then play at Madison Central on Thursday and at the Brookhaven tournament on Saturday.
