Riverdale Academy was able to keep Porters Chapel close for five innings, but the Eagles’ bats came alive in the sixth to seal a 10-4 win Saturday night.
“(Riverdale) did a good job tonight,” PCA coach Randy Wright said. “They scrapped and fought hard, but we just finally got to their pitcher.”
The Rebels (14-7) struck first, getting two runs in the top of the third. The Eagles (16-4) came back in their half of the inning, taking a 3-2 lead, but Riverdale got two more in the fourth to reclaim it.
PCA took the lead for good in the fifth, scoring three runs to push it to 6-4, and their four-run sixth sealed it.
The first five batters to come to the plate in the sixth inning got hits. Dean Hill started things off with a single, followed by a base hit each from Spencer Pell and Cole Smith to score Hill. Michael Busby’s triple cleared the bases. Moose Carney brought him in to finish the night 3-for-4 with five RBIs.
After starter Thomas Lester got Dan Ivey to ground out for the first out of the inning, Will Hanna was brought in to pitch to Hayden Hales. Lester finished with nine strikeouts and gave up 11 hits on the night.
Hanna got a lucky break to end the disastrous inning when Carney was thrown out trying to score on Hales’ base hit, and Hales got caught trying to take second base.
“(Lester) was just getting tired after five innings,” Riverdale coach Steven Adams said. “He left some pitches up in the zone, and they hit the ball.”
Pell, who had been brought in to relieve Smith, held the Rebels hitless in the sixth and seventh to close it out for the Eagles.
Smith struck out seven and gave up just five hits in five full innings.
“Both of my pitchers did a good job,” Wright said. “Cole did a good job; he had some defensive play behind him, and it’s good for him to get a win, and Pell did well closing it out for us.”
Hanna and Dustin Allen led Riverdale at the plate with two hits each, and David Coffey had a two-RBI single.
Smith, Busby, Hales, and Pell all had two hits for the Eagles to go with Carney’s three-hit performance.
Vicksburg 1, Terry 0
Steven Price made sure the Vicksburg Gators didn’t miss three starters too much.
Price improved to 4-0 on the season by twirling a two-hit complete game as the Gators defeated Terry 1-0 on Saturday.
Vicksburg (16-6) was playing without five players because of the ACT tests, but the single run the Gators scored in the third inning held up.
James Jackson led off the third inning with a double and scored on Tanner Woodson’s bloop single to left field for the game’s only run.
Price struck out seven and at one point retired 15 straight Terry players.
It was also the Gators first error-free game of the year.
Vicksburg, which has won four straight, will play for the Division 6-5A championship on Tuesday at archrival Warren Central.
Madison Central 9-8, WC 8-6
Madison Central improved to 25-0 on the season with a pair of close wins over the snakebitten Warren Central Vikings.
WC fell to 15-11 on the year and have lost many of those games by a single run.
“In that first game, you can’t play any better than we did,” WC coach Randy Broome said. “Somewhere, somehow we have to find the next shelf. We’ve been in all of them, but it’s frustrating.”
In the first game, Warren Central held an 8-6 lead in the bottom of the seventh, but the Jaguars scored two in the seventh, then added the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth.
Nick Carson, Zach Balthrop and Drew Warnock each had two hits, Josh Gordon hit a three-run home run and Eric Douglas belted an RBI double.
In the second game, Warren Central held a 6-2 lead going into the fifth inning before Madison scored five runs in the fifth to take a 7-6 lead. The Jaguars added a single run in the sixth inning.
Ryan Grey had a two-RBI double and Cody Ferguson had three hits for the Vikings.

WC 2, Brookhaven 0
WC 11, Franklin Co. 0
Warren Central swept the Brookhaven Tournament winning all three games of a four-team round-robin.
In the first game, Anna Griffing hit a pinch-hit grounder that was misplayed by Loyd Star allowing Anna Jones to score for a six-inning victory. Lauren Anderson earned the victory.
In the second game, Tiffany Fuller had two of the Lady Vikes’ (18-5) three hits and scored both runs to help sister Brittany earn the win on the mound.
In the finale, Mandy Fuller went 2-for-2 and Tiffany Fuller added a hit to lead the Lady Vikes to a blowout of Franklin County.
Anderson earned her second victory of the afternoon and the Lady Vikes only committed one error over the three games.
Warren Central is scheduled to play at Clinton on Monday, then host Terry on Thursday before starting the Class 5A state playoffs on Saturday at home, most likely against Picayune.season best time of 10.87 seconds. He also won the triple jump (43-feet, 3-inches) and anchored the 4-by-100 (42.92) and 4-by-200 relay (1:29.90) teams to wins.
“I thought off if we our 4-by-2 team got run under 1:30, it would be a good day,” WC coach Larry Tyrone said.
