A Vicksburg man was jailed in Jackson Friday and charged with murder in the workplace shooting of a co-worker at a tire store, Jackson police said.

Eddie Mitchell, 51, 403 Cairo Drive, was charged with killing Clifton Patterson, 43, of Benton, while the two men were working at Anglin Tire Co., 926 Interstate 20 at Gallatin Street. Both men were mechanics.

Police believe an argument about missing tools sparked the shooting.

Jackson police spokesman Robert Graham said the two men had a long-running dispute “but it has obviously never reached that level before.”

He said there was no history of physical fights between the two men.

“There was nothing other than (Mitchell) approached the (Patterson) regarding missing tools today,” Graham said.

The tools in question are just “ordinary mechanic’s tools,” Graham said.

Patterson was shot with a .38-caliber gun, Graham said. Detectives believe Mitchell kept the weapon in a toolbox, he said.

Patterson was pronounced dead at the University of Mississippi Medical Center shortly after the shooting.

A preliminary examination showed that Patterson was shot once each in the abdomen, left shoulder and in the back of the head, Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart said.

An autopsy was scheduled, she said.

Mitchell was arrested at the scene, Graham said. He was at the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond without bond Friday night. No one else was injured in the shooting, Graham said.

Mitchell had worked at the tire company for about 15 years, Graham said.

Company owner Dent Anglin said the shooting has shaken employees.

“It has shocked us to death,” Anglin said. “We can’t figure it out.”
