Candidates seeking Democratic nominations in three municipal races will take questions from the public at the last forum scheduled before Tuesday’s primary vote.
The forum will be from 3 until 5 p.m. Saturday at the Jackson Street Community Center. The public is invited to ask questions of the nine candidates whose names will appear on the party primary ballots.
The third forum so far this election season is sponsored by the Vicksburg Municipal and Warren County Democratic executive committees.
Vying for the party’s nomination for mayor are John Ferguson, 63; Eric Rawlings, 42; Charles Selmon, 44, and John Shorter, 38.
If none of those candidates gets a majority of Tuesday’s votes, a runoff election will be May 17. The party’s nominee will advance to the June 7 general election to face Republican Shirley Newman Smollen, 69, and independent candidates Mayor Laurence Leyens, 40, and former Mayor Joe Loviza, 65.
In the North Ward alderman’s race, incumbent Gertrude Young, 49, will face Warren County District 2 Supervisor Michael Mayfield, 47, and Rodney Dillamar, 45, for the nomination. The winner will then take on independent candidates Vickie Bailey, 37, and Tommie Rawlings, 42, and Republican Carl Yelverton, 58, in the general election.
DaVon Grey, 46, and Pam Johnson, 39, are the only two candidates for the Democratic nomination in the South Ward with the winner facing off with incumbent Sid Beauman, 57, a Republican, in the general election.
Because Beauman, Smollen and Yelverton are the only Republican seeking office this year and since each is unopposed there will be no Republican ballots for Tuesday’s election.
Noon Saturday is also the deadline to cast an absentee ballot in advance of Tuesday’s election. Registered voters who will be out of the county on the day of the election can vote early at the City Clerk’s Office.
The last day to register to vote in the June 7 general election is May 7.
