Ray Coleman Jordan Sr.

Services for Ray Coleman Jordan Sr. will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Kent Campbell officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Mr. Jordan died Saturday, April 30, 2005, at St. Dominic Memorial Hospital in Jackson. He was 71.

Mr. Jordan was born in Ashland. He was a resident of Vicksburg for more than 45 years. He spent 4 1/2 years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was self-employed with Jordan Refrigeration for 30 years. He was a member of the Woodlawn Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Effie Jordan, and four brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Wilkerson Jordan of Vicksburg; two sons, Coleman Jordan and Steve Jordan, both of Vicksburg; two daughters, Teresa Jordan and Donna Jordan Brown, both of Vicksburg; three brothers, Lee Jordan of Hickory Flat, Jessie Jordan of Indianapolis, Ind., and Sam Jordan of Ripley; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be John Jordan, Ray Jordan III, Michael Jordan, Steven Jordan, Justin Brown, Wesley Brown and Richard Brown.

William R. McCurdy

TALLULAH – William R. “Duck” McCurdy died Sunday, May 1, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. He was 29.

Born in Monroe, Mr. McCurdy had lived in Vicksburg for two years. He was pool operator for the Ergon Terminal.

He is survived by his wife, Kimberly Travis McCurdy; one daughter, Courtney Alexis McCurdy; his mother and stepfather, Reida and Gary Hart of Blue Springs, Miss.; his father, William Ralph McCurdy of Bernice, La.; a sister, Angelia Gallegos of New Albany; a half-brother, William R. McCurdy of Cary; and a half-sister, Christy Creech of Oak Grove.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Parkview Baptist Church in Tallulah with the Rev. Cletus Moak officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the church.

Pallbearers will be Stevie Miles, PeeWee Miles and Tommy Hart.

Lola B. Porter

Lola B. Porter died Monday, May 2, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. She was 65.

Mrs. Porter was retired from the Vicksburg Warren School District. She was a member of Gospel Temple M.B. Church where she was on the Usher Board.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Jean Porter; her father, Lee A. Gaines Sr.; a brother, Thomas Gaines; her maternal grandparents, Lelia and Ford Pinder; and her paternal grandparents, Anita and David Gaines.

Survivors include one son, Cedric L. Porter of Jeffersonville, Ind.; two daughters, Sylvia O. Cooper of Louisville, Ky., and Darlene P. Stout of Jeffersonville; her mother, Lillian Hunter Gaines of Vicksburg; three brothers, Lee A. Gaines Jr. and Richard Gaines, both of Oakland, Calif., and Reuben Gaines of Dallas, Texas; a sister, Sadie G. Jackson of Vicksburg; nine grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives, including Clarence Williams and Josephine Sanders.

Dr. Joseph Smith

UTICA – Dr. Joseph Smith died Thursday, April 28, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. He was 67.

Born in Mound Bayou, Dr. Smith graduated from Mound Bayou High School. In 1962, he received a bachelor of science degree in math with a minor in chemistry from Rust College. He taught mathematics at Utica Junior College and later attended Atlanta University, where he received a master of science degree.

He received a doctorate in mathematics from Rutgers University in 1973. He was a professor at Alcorn State University and later chaired the department of mathematics and computer science. He retired in 2000 and was designated Professor Emeritus by ASU.

He was a member of St. Peter M.B. Church in Utica.

Dr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Mose A. and Rosetta Smith; one sister, Mary Alice Manzy; and five brothers, Edward Smith, Nathaniel Smith, Roosevelt Smith, Calvin Smith and Fred Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Wilson Smith of Utica; one son, Janeiro Smith of Vicksburg; two sisters, Lee Dorothy James of Mound Bayou and Ida Mae Collins of Memphis, Tenn.; one brother, Curtis Smith of Mound Bayou; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives including Bobby Washington Jr. and Kamora Washington, both of Utica.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hinds Community College Gymnasium in Utica. Burial will follow at St. Peter M.B. Church in Utica. Visitation will be from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Wednesday at Westhaven Memorial Funeral Home in Utica.

Pallbearers will be the Masonic brothers.

Doris Yvonne Anderson Strong

Doris Yvonne Anderson Strong died Friday, April 29, 2005, at Select Specialty Hospital/Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. She was 57.

Mrs. Strong was a graduate of Alcorn State University and a retired educator at R.H. Watkins High School in Laurel. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Zion Travelers Church.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Lucille Miles Anderson.

Survivors include her husband, Walter C. Strong Jr. of Vicksburg; one daughter, Michelle Strong Greer of Jackson; her father, Aaron Anderson Sr. of Chicago; one grandmother, Mattie Lee Squalls Brewster of Edwards; two sisters, Virginia Perkins and Vickie Hampton of Chicago; one brother, Aaron Anderson Jr. of Chicago; and nieces, nephews and other relatives including the Anderson, Banks, Brewster, Miles, Tate, Strong, Greer and Murray families.

Joann S. Waston

PORT GIBSON – Joann S. Waston died Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at her home. She was 55.

Mrs. Waston was born to the late Albert Smith and Cora R. Smith. She was a graduate of Addison School.

Survivors include three sons, Jimmie Waston Jr., Cori Waston and Jamie Waston, all of Port Gibson; and a daughter, Cassandra Waston-Baggett of Whitting, Ind.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Welcome Baptist Church in Port Gibson. Burial will follow at Welcome Baptist Cemetery under the direction of Westhaven Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be the deacons of Welcome Baptist Church.

Robert N. White

Robert N. “Bob” White died Sunday, May 1, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. He was 68.

Born in Toccopola, Miss., Mr. White had been a Vicksburg resident since 1966. He was a graduate of the University of Mississippi, where he had received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering.

From 1961 until 1966, he was employed with the U.S. Government Soil Sedimentation Laboratory in Oxford. From 1966 until his retirement in 1994, he was employed by the Corps of Engineers District Office in the Construction Branch.

Mr. White was a member of Highland Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, Sunday school teacher and active in the World Changers.

He was preceded in death by his father, Halbert Newton White.

He is survived by his wife, Joann B. White of Vicksburg; two sons, Ronald Reed White of Clinton and Barry Cole White of Vicksburg; a foster daughter, Brea Hugley of Vicksburg; two grandsons, Michael White and Paul White, both of Vicksburg; his mother, Lorene L. White of Vicksburg; a brother, Jimmy White of Oxford; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Baptist Church with the Rev. Brian Ivey, pastor, and the Rev. David Grimsley officiating. Family interment services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Old Lebanon Cemetery in Toccopola.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at Riles Funeral Home and Wednesday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of the service.

Pallbearers will be Lonnie Wooley, Jim Brannon, Jim Stevens, Marvin Miller, Tom Luckett, Larry Cooley, Dan Tipton and Jackie Bourn.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dan Ward, Dwain Cotton, Bill Raden, Bill Hanks, Gordon Stevens and Charles Sanders.
