North Ward Alderman Gertrude Young said she hasn’t decided what to do with the $6,700 left over from her campaign for re-election, but she probably will donate it to charities.

“I tried to send some of it back, but people said ‘no,’ that I should keep it,” Young said.

After 12 years at City Hall, Young, 49, will leave her post in July after losing the Democratic primary race last month to Warren County District 2 Supervisor Michael Mayfield. She turned in her final campaign finance report Tuesday along with candidates in next week’s primary runoff election.

Young’s report shows she raised $21,591 in the campaign, spent $14,890 and has a balance of $6,701.

“They say you can do pretty much whatever you want with it, and I usually use it for sponsorships or scholarships,” she said.

Candidates are required to submit a termination report indicating they are no longer accepting campaign contributions or continue to report donations and expenses periodically. Former mayoral candidate John Shorter last week submitted his final report, showing a zero balance.

In runoff campaign finance reports due Tuesday, Charles Selmon showed year-to-date contributions of $9,900 and expenses of $8,498. John Ferguson reported $7,020 in contributions and $5,562 in disbursements.

Selmon, 44, the Warren County District 3 supervisor, and Ferguson, 63, the former Warren County District 2 supervisor, will face off Tuesday for the Democratic party nomination.

The winner will face incumbent Mayor Laurence Leyens, 40, and former Mayor Joe Loviza, 65, both independents, and Republican nominee Shirley N. Smollen, 69, in the June 7 general election.

Leyens has reported contributions totaling $72,000. Other candidates for mayor are not required to submit financial reports until May 31.

Also in the general election, Mayfield, 47, the winner of the North Ward Democratic primary, will take on Vickie Bailey, 37, and Tommie Rawlings, 42, for that post. In the South Ward, primary winner Pam Johnson, 39, will face incumbent Sid Beauman, 57, a Republican.
