OXFORD – As Brian Pettway’s sixth-inning home run sailed out of Swayze Field on Sunday, like so many flew out of Warren Central’s Viking Field during his prep days, he added more lore to a junior season that has been, to say the least, magical.
Pettway, the leading hitter in the Southeastern Conference and Ferriss Trophy winner, slugged his 21st home run of the season during the Rebels’ 6-4 win during the first game of the Super Regional against Texas.
The blast tied the Ole Miss record set by Jason Huisman in 1998. It also tied Pettway for the school’s single-season hits record with 101. That mark was set in 1999 by Brad Henderson.
Pettway broke the hits record in the final game of the season Monday with a ninth-inning single, giving the slugger 102 hits for the year.
At one time, Henry desired to be a Longhorn
In high school, Justin Henry starred on the baseball field and the football field at Vicksburg High. The quarterback prospect deeply desired to attend the University of Texas to play football for the Longhorns.
When he decided during his senior season to dump football in favor of baseball, he also dumped the burnt orange of the Longhorns.
Ole Miss lost in the Super Regionals on Monday in Oxford against those same Longhorns, but Henry has never once had a regret about his decision to play in Oxford instead of Austin.
Henry did plenty of damage against his once-favorite school in the seventh inning of the first game. With runners on first and second and Texas leading 4-2, Henry laid down a bunt to move pinch-runner Alex Presley and Miles Franklin over. Pitcher J. Brent Cox slid down, fielded the ball and threw it deep into right field allowing two Rebels to score. Henry scored soon after with what would become the game-winning run on a two-RBI single by Mark Wright.
Henry had three hits in the series.
Home-field advantage for the Longhorns?
Ole Miss carried the nation’s No. 5 national seed, which earned the team the right to host a Super Regional.
But Texas was declared the home team for Monday’s deciding third game because of a coin flip.
“I don’t know what we picked,” Texas head coach Augie Garrido said. “I really don’t do much around here.”
Talk about a rain delay
The rain began pelting Oxford soon after the first pitch of Saturday’s first game of the Oxford Super Regional. At 7:10 p.m., the game was delayed because of the weather.
Shortly after 10 p.m., officials postponed the game until Sunday at noon. At 12:07 p.m. Sunday, the game began. Total duration of the stoppage: 17 hours, 3 minutes.
Mild-mannered Henry shown the door
Of all the members of the Ole Miss baseball team to get thrown out of a game, Justin henry figured to be one of the last.
The easygoing Vicksburg High graduate was tossed after striking out in the eighth inning of the Rebels’ 3-1 loss to Texas in Game 2 of the Oxford Super Regional on Sunday.
“They said he threw his helmet,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said after the game.
Henry was called out looking on two outside pitches. He started walking back to the dugout and threw his helmet to the ground, leading to the ejection.
