Selwyn Wallace Guy died Friday, June 17, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. He was 60.

Born in Eden, Miss., he had been a resident of Vicksburg most of his life. He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Johnson and Doris Niven Gessler.

Mr. Guy was a 1963 graduate of H.V. Cooper High School and was a graduate of Hinds Junior College. He was a chief petty officer in the Navy, retiring with 22 years of service. He retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Waterways Experiment Station as an electronics technician in 2004. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Bowmar Baptist Church.

He his survived by his wife, Pat Stubbs Guy of Vicksburg; one son, Chris Guy of Tupelo; two sisters, Ruth Spicer of Monticello and Nancy Carson of Raymond; two brothers, Gene Guy of Linden, Ala., and J.B. Gessler of Hartwood, Va.; several nieces and nephews including Jennifer Bassett and Eleanor Geary, both of Brandon, and Rebecca Geary of Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 20, 2005, at Riles Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Terry White, pastor of Bowmar Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Green Acres cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Pallbearers will be Randy Stubbs, T.J. Stubbs, Johnny Puckett, Joe Loviza, Phares Griffin and Jim Bassett.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. David Halinski, Dr. Walter Johnston Jr., Dr. Tim Fagerburg, Homer Greer, Leiland Duke, Bruce Barker, Bobby Lyons, Sammy Niven and co-workers of the ISD of Waterways Experiment Station.

Charles Bowie Lanford Jr.

Charles Bowie Lanford Jr., 70, died Friday, June 17, 2005, at River Region Medical Center in Vicksburg, Miss. Visitation will be held Monday afternoon, June 20, from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. service, Celebration of Life, at Riles Funeral Home. Services will also be held at a future date in Bowling Green, Va. Riles Funeral Home, 5000 Indiana Ave., Vicksburg, 39180, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Lanford was born July 2, 1934, in Baltimore, Md., grew up in Bowling Green, Va., and lived in Vicksburg, Miss., for the past 35 years. He was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and served two years in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959. He taught school briefly before beginning a career as a historian with the National Park Service in 1960. He served as park historian at Petersburg National Battlefield, Fort Pulaski National Monument and Chalmette National Historic Park and was chief of operations at Vicksburg National Military Park until he retired in 1995.

He was active in Toastmasters International, the Vicksburg Art Association and the Vicksburg Theater Guild. He was a member of the National Association of Interpretation and the Eastern National Parks and Monument Association. He was an avid golfer and photographer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Bowie Lanford Sr. and Nellie Davis Lanford. He is survived by Toni Lanford of Vicksburg and by his children, Joseph Anthony Lanford and wife, Melissa, of Houston, Texas; Mary Catherine Lanford and Lucy Ann Memmo of Richmond, Va.; Charles Michael Lanford and wife, Katherine, of Ridgeland, Miss.; and John Bowie Lanford and wife, Katherine, of New Orleans. He is also survived by his brothers Joseph Glennon Lanford and wife, Barbara, of Bowling Green, Va., and John Davis Lanford Sr. and wife, Charlotte, of Gloucester, Va.

Survivors also include six grandchildren, Caroline and Elizabeth Lanford of Ridgeland, Miss., Sarah and Blake Lanford of Houston, Texas, and Ruby Grace and Neva Maxine Lanford of New Orleans; cousins Anne Winters Haynie (Wendell) of Reedville, Va., Betsy Layman of Kilmarnock, Va., Nancy Carr (Al) of Augusta, Ga., Gayle Hudnall (Bud) of Kilmarnock, Va., and Bonnie McNeal (Tom) of Tybee Island, Ga.; nieces Beth Pruitt (Ned) of Toano, Va., Sarah Brady (Brent) of Fredericksburg, Va., and Jennifer Blanks (Mike) of Newport News, Va.; nephews Glen Lanford of Bowling Green, Va., and John Davis Lanford of Gloucester, Va.; four great-nieces; and two great-nephews.

Tim Williams

NEWBERN, Tenn. – Tim Williams died Friday, June 17, 2005, at his home. He was 40.

Mr. Williams was from Lake County, Tenn., and worked in that county’s sheriff’s department before moving to Vicksburg.

He was a Warren County deputy sheriff for about five years before accepting an appointment as marshal of the village of Delta, La., where he was also a K-9 officer.

He was a Methodist.

Survivors include his wife, Sherry Sexton Williams; a son, Adam Williams; a daughter, Savannah Williams; his mother and stepfather, Wayne and Ruth Ann Perkins Taylor of Clinton, Ky.; two brothers, Terry Williams of Churchton, Tenn., and Bobby Joe Williams of Paris, Tenn.; three sisters, Charlene Williams of Clinton, Ky., Betty Ann Burton of Union City, Ind., and Shirley Ann Williams of Alamo, Tenn.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today at the Tiptonville Chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Lake Memorial Gardens.
