Parks and recreation director Joe Graves aimed for the formation of four teams when starting an adult baseball league in Vicksburg.

He’s almost doubled his expectations.

More than 100 players have registered for the league, which will begin on July 5. Graves said there will be either seven or eight teams when the first games are played.

Games are scheduled for Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through the second week of August. All games are scheduled for Bazinsky Field. Games will start at 6 p.m. each night with the second game following at 8.

“The numbers have been tremendous,” said Graves, who is the oldest player at 47. “There are a lot of guys who haven’t played baseball in 10 or 15 years and they want to strap on the cleats and see what happens.”

Graves said most of the players are in their mid-20s, but he said several players in their 30s and a couple 40-somethings are planning on taking the field.

Graves will field a team called the Vicksburg Angels, which will feature former Vicksburg High standouts J.J. Brown, Junior Allen and Shandell Lockridge. He will also have several of his former St. Aloysius players.
