The Warren County unemployment rate took a 1.3 percentage point jump from April to May of this year, according to the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.
At the same time as Warren County’s rate rose from 6.1 percent to 7.4 percent, the state’s unemployment rate also took a jump, rising from 6.3 percent in April to 7.3 percent in May.
The department said the number of Mississippians employed rose by 3,700, while the number of those without jobs increased by 14,500.
Department officials reported job gains in construction, manufacturing and education and health services.
Losses were reported in trade, transportation and utilities and professional and business services.
“We expect the unemployment rate to continue to rise in June when the bulk of the student workers seek jobs,” said Liz Barnett, public information director.
In Sharkey and Issaquena Counties, the jobless rate also rose between April and May. Sharkey went from 9.4 percent to 10.9 percent while Issaquena rose from 10.3 percent to 11.3.
In Claiborne County, the jobless rate dropped from 12.1 percent in April to 10.4 percent in May.
