An unidentified man died early this morning after authorities said he jumped in front of a car approaching the Interstate 20 bridge over the Mississippi River.

Warren County Coroner John Thomason said he had contacted authorities from Texas to Georgia to identify the white male who appeared to be in his 40s.

The driver of the car, a woman from Monroe, La., told the Vicksburg Police Department that the man leapt in front of her 2002 Chevrolet Malibu as she drove west. The pedestrian, who was facing east, held his hands up in the air as he jumped out, the driver told police.

Authorities received the call at 12:26 a.m. No charges were filed against the woman, Capt. Mark Culbertson said.

Thomason said an autopsy would be performed on the man today.

The fatality is the sixth resulting from a wreck in 2005 in Warren County.
