A Vicksburg man was killed and another was injured in an early morning drive-by shooting Sunday north of the downtown area.
David W. “Jones” Anderson, 41, 4719 Gibson Road, was shot several times in the left side after getting into a Nissan Stanza at about 1:35 to leave the parking lot of the Elks Lodge at 2916 Walnut St., said Vicksburg Police Capt. Mark Culbertson.
Anderson died at the scene and an autopsy was scheduled for today in Pearl, said Warren County Coroner John Thomason.
A passenger in the car, John King, 38, 2006 Ford St., was also shot in the abdomen and taken to River Region Medical Center. King was not listed in the hospital’s register this morning.
Culbertson said several people were gathered around the scene, but police were having trouble finding witnesses to describe the vehicle driven by the shooter.
“At this time, they have no suspects,” Culbertson said of investigators assigned to the case. “And they don’t have a motive.”
Warren County Sheriff’s deputies were called to help with traffic trying to leave the area and to search for the suspect’s vehicle, said Sheriff Martin Pace.
Anderson was a 1982 graduate of Vicksburg High School and a self-employed carpenter. He had two sons.
The homicide was the second reported in Vicksburg this year. Kennado Caples, 26, 2708 Letitia St., was shot and killed by an intruder around 3:25 a.m. May 8 at the home he shared with his girlfriend. No arrest has been made.
Three killings were reported in Vicksburg in 2004.
