Charles P. Burton Jr.

Charles P. “Papaw Smurff” Burton Jr. died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, at the Veterans Administration Nursing Home in Jackson. He was 83.

Mr. Burton was the son of the late Charles Percy and Inez Fuller Burton, and he was a a lifelong resident of Vicksburg.

Mr. Burton was a veteran of World War II, where he was a prisoner of war in Germany. He was a private first class with the 119th Infantry Regiment of the Army.

Mr. Burton was a tree surgeon and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

He is survived by six sons, Charles Percy Burton III and Johnny Ray Burton, both of Vicksburg, David Burton of Gatlinburg, Tenn., Kenneth Burton of Gulfport, Fritz Burton of Angola, La., and Gary Burton of Hattiesburg; and his caretaker, Peggy Cockrell of Vicksburg.

Arrangements were incomplete with Fisher Funeral Home.

Ione S. Hall

Mrs. Ione S. Hall died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, at her home on Drummond Street. She was 91.

Born Oct. 17, 1913, in Gulfport, she was the daughter of the late James E. and Teresa Hecht Swetman. She grew up in Gulfport and was a graduate of Gulfport High School. Mrs. Hall attended Louisiana State University Nursing School at the Charity Hospital in New Orleans, where she finished with a degree as a nurse anesthetist.

She married Dr. Donald Street Hall Sr. while at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. She practiced nurse anesthesiology in New York City at Kings County Hospital during Dr. Hall’s medical training.

They returned to Vicksburg for a short while until World World II. After the war, they returned to Vicksburg.

She was a charter member of the Vicksburg Junior Auxiliary. She was active in her garden club and many local charities. She raised two sons who survive her, Dr. Donald S. Hall Jr. of Vicksburg and Dr. James Hall of Brookhaven.

Survivors also include her grandchildren, Katherine Ann Hall, Valerie Hall, Madeleine Hall and Sam Hall; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hall was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Donald Street Hall Sr., in 1998.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be said at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, at St. Paul Catholic Church with Father P.J. Curley officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. Tuesday until the hour of the service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Mack Ferris, Minor Ferris, Dan Swetman, Nick Wentzel, Mike Lebetard, Jack Thomas, Herb Jones, Henry Tatem, Robert Wayne, Lee Davis Thames, John Gussio and Steve Maynord.

Memorials may be made to Vicksburg Catholic School, 1900 Grove St., Vicksburg, MS 39183; or to St. Paul Catholic Church at 713 Crawford St., Vicksburg, MS 39180.

Mary Ferguson Johnson

Mary Ferguson Johnson died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, at Vicksburg Convalescent Home. She was 73.

Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker and a member of Zion Travelers M.B. Church, where she was an usher.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Willie Ann Jackson Ferguson; four brothers, John Earl Ferguson, Elmer Lee Ferguson, Lee Arthur Ferguson and Clarence Ferguson; and three sisters, Cleo Williams, Lucy Barber ad Ruthie Lee Woods.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by her husband, Leroy Johnson of Vicksburg; a daughter, Ruby Ferguson Hunter of Vicksburg; two sisters, Willie Mae Ferguson of Vicksburg and Marie Ferguson of New York; and a granddaughter.
