Warren Central was an unhappy guest at Grenada High School’s flag party last Friday night. The Vikings survived with a 22-11 win, but not before being penalized 11 times for 108 yards.
Several of the penalties were minor infractions, such as offsides and motion penalties. Coach Curtis Brewer’s team had gone nearly 10 days without practice because of the chaos caused by Hurricane Katrina in the Warren County area.
“We got every kind of flag but the American flag,” Brewer said Monday at his office at WC. “We had a good many flags. A lot of offsides and there were a couple of 15-yarders.
“We were playing pretty aggressive on defense and so was Grenada. I think a lot of it was us not being in a game type situation for two weeks. I attribute it to that.”
Viking safety Tiger Robinson, one of the team’s most feared hitters, drew one of the 15-yard penalties after a scuffle and was sent off the field, but Brewer said he was not ejected.
“He got a penalty and the official was just trying to control the situation,” Brewer said. “He was not ejected and he will be able to play this week (at South Pike).”
Overall, Brewer said he had no complaints with the officiating.
As for the Vikings’ performance, he did express some concerns.
“Our offensive timing wasn’t very good and that was probably due to the big layoff,” Brewer said.
The Vikings had a hard time moving the ball against the Chargers, finishing with just 136 yards in total offense. Lead back Carleton Davis was held to only 31 yards on 7 carries.
Quarterback Ryan Williams completed just 2 of 8 passes for 24 yards.
Defensively, the Vikings continued to shine. Robinson ran back a fumble 76 yards for a much-needed touchdown.
“In spots, we looked real good on defense,” Brewer said.
Michael Holt led the club in tackles with nine, including five solos, while Larry Walker had seven stops, including two for losses. WC held Grenada to 92 yards rushing on 30 carries.
Grenada was limited to just a field goal until the waning moments of the game when they finally got their lone touchdown.
On Friday, WC takes on South Pike (2-0). a team that enters as the top-ranked team in Class 3A. South Pike beat Noxubee County 28-14 in Macon last week.
