Bessie Archibald

PORT GIBSON – Bessie Archibald died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, at Claiborne County Nursing Home in Port Gibson. She was 95.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Detroit Archibald; her parents, Henry and Mary Cotton-Singleton; and one son, Daniel Walker.

Survivors include one daughter, Jimmie Lee Fox of Chicago; an adopted daughter, Kimberly Jackson of Holly Springs; one sister, Sammie Hooper of Port Gibson; four grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and other relatives including Genova Walker of Chicago and Jessie Thurmond of Port Gibson.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at China Grove M.B. Church in Russum with the Rev. Leon Nelson officiating. Burial will follow at McCaa Cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home Inc. in Port Gibson.

Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and from 1 p.m. Friday until the service at the church.

Orville T. Barfield Jr.

LONGVIEW, Texas – Orville T. “BB” Barfield Jr. died at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, Texas. He was 79.

Mr. Barfield served in the Navy. He worked as a welder for Illinois Central Railroad in Vicksburg. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Longview.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville T. Barfield Sr. and Vilena Johnson Barfield.

Survivors include one sister, Peggy Barfield Akin in Longview; nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 3 today at East Texas Funeral Home with the Rev. Dewayne Beaty officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 1 until 3 this evening at the funeral home in Longview.

Minnie Catherine Webb Garnett

Minnie Catherine Webb Garnett died Monday, Sept. 26, 2005, at River Region Medical Center in Vicksburg. She was 89.

Mrs. Garnett was born in Laurel. She was a homemaker. She was a member of DAR, Eastern Star and Highland Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfonso Webb and Anna Phillips Webb; and one son, James Erwin Huffstatler.

Survivors include her son, Phillip Huffstatler Sr. of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Pinecrest Cemetery in Tchula with the Rev. Doug Lawson officiating. Pallbearers will be Phillip Huffstatler Jr., Anne Marie Tovar, Stephen Webb Huffstatler, Michael Odom Huffstatler, Jay Huffstatler and Jennifer Huffstatler.

Charles Gladwell Jr.

Charles Gladwell Jr. died Sunday, Sept. 18, 2005, at his home in Vicksburg. He was 66.

Mr. Gladwell was a native of Grand Gulf. He had been a resident of Vicksburg since 1953. He was employed as a service station attendant at Rose Oil Company for 13 years and a commercial fisherman. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Katherine Sting Gladwell Sr.; two brothers, Edward Eugene Gladwell, Jimmy Gladwell Sr.; and one sister, Mary Dunlap.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy G. Gladwell of Vicksburg; one daughter, Stephanie Bell Gladwell of Vicksburg; one son, David Gladwell of Vicksburg; two stepsons, Willie Gladwell Jr. and Charles Edward Gladwell, both of Vicksburg; three brothers, Robert Gladwell and Willie Gladwell Sr., both of Vicksburg, and William Cade of Port Gibson; five sisters, Nell Bunch of Benoit and Jo Doupier, Betty Hunter, Shirley Stephens and Dorothy Melton, all of Vicksburg; two grandchildren; other relatives including Flosey Carroll of Grand Gulf and Walter Cox of Redwood.

Private memorial services will be under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall, Boy Scout Road, Vicksburg, MS 39180.

Lois Faye Hinds

Lois Faye Hinds died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005, in Vicksburg. She was 43.

Mrs. Hinds was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. David Hinds of Harvey, La.; her daughter, Alyssa Hinds of Harvey; two brothers, Raymond Fry Jr. of Seattle, Wash., and Desmond Fry of Tacoma, Wash.; two sisters, Ravina Fry and June Fry, both of San Antonio, Texas; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives, including Karen Dove Jackson of Vicksburg.

Samuel Mitchell Sr.

Samuel Mitchell Sr. died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. He was 70.

Mr. Mitchell was a resident of Vicksburg and a graduate of Rosa A. Temple High School. He was a member and deacon at Holly Grove M.B. Church.

He was preceded in death by Mary Elizabeth Jones Mitchell; his parents, Sinclair and Rohnea Mitchell; two daughters, Samantha Lee Mitchell and Della Deloris Jones; a brother, Julius Mitchell Sr.; and one sister, Annie Mitchell Hawthorne.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Mitchell; five sons, Samuel Mitchell Jr. of Albuquerque, N.M., Willie Jones Sr. of Cheyenne, Wyo., Jeff Jones Sr. of Dallas, and Clarence Jones Sr. and Frank McClendon Jr., both of Vicksburg; four daughters, Beverly Green, Cora James, Rosie James and Angie Lattimore, all of Vicksburg; two brothers, Abron Mitchell of Fort Washington, Md., and William Mitchell of McKinney, Texas; a sister, Ella Mae Cook of Vicksburg; 28 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Juanita Morgan Smith

PORT GIBSON – Juanita Morgan Smith, age 80, died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005, at the Claiborne County Nursing Center.

Mrs. Smith was born to the late Mr. Gus Morgan and Mrs. Nettie Morgan, who were the owners of Morgan’s Pecan in Port Gibson. Mrs. Smith had been a resident of Port Gibson all her life. She worked in Mimosa Restaurant for over 20 years before taking over the pecan business at her father’s death, until her recent illness. The family business is now being run by her daughter Georgia and her husband, Edward Bryant. She was a member of Beech Grove Baptist Church.

She is survived by her loving family: daughter Georgia Bryant and her husband, Edward, of Port Gibson; daughter Kathy Cupit and husband, Pete, of Hazlehurst; son Gus “Billy” Smith of Port Gibson; eight grandchildren, Ray, Kevin and Jerry Bryant, William, Michelle and Ashley Smith, Jess Jr. and Nick Cloy and one stepgrandson, C.J. Cupit; eight great-grandchildren, Trey, Zack, Karime, Thomas and Cody Bryant, Ronnie and Tyler Smith and Emily Greer. She is also survived by two nieces, Josie Keith and husband, Grady, and Nell Speaks of Tupelo and nephew Riley Nelson and wife, Brenda, of Vicksburg.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Ruthie Mae Morgan Nelson, and two nephews, James L. Nelson of Florida and Herbert C. Nelson of Tupelo.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Glenwood Funeral Home of Port Gibson with the Rev. Gage Hynum officiating. Burial will be at Wintergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight.

Pallbearers will be Ray Bryant, Kevin Bryant, Jerry Bryant, William Smith, Jessie Cloy and Nicholas Cloy.

Honorary pallbearers will be Trey Bryant, Zack Bryant and Cody Bryant.

David L. Street

FLORA – David L. Street died Monday, Sept. 26, 2005, at his home in Flora. He was 83.

Mr. Street was an Army veteran and retired superintendent of the Yazoo City Street Department. A native of Wayne County, he was a member of First Baptist Church in Flora.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lemwuel B. Street and Donna Snellgrove; four brothers; and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Street of Flora; two daughters, Lynda Breithaupt of Flora and Marianne Brackin of Reidsville, Ga.; two sons, Benny Street of Canton and Robert Street of Brandon; one sister, Warrene Jones of Clinton; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Flora with the Revs. Ricky Blyth and Larry Saxton officiating. Burial will follow at Flora City Cemetery under the direction of Stricklin-King Funeral Home in Yazoo City.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 this evening at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. Friday until the service at the church.

Brian Lee Winterstein

FLORENCE – Brian Lee Winterstein, age 28, of Florence passed away at his home with his family on September 22, 2005, after a lengthy illness with Leukodystrophy.

Services were Saturday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. at Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram with burial following at Lakewood South.

Brian graduated from Forest Hill High School where he lettered in track, soccer and also was a four year letterman in cross country. He attended Hinds Community College up to the time of his illness. He attended Griffith Memorial Baptist Church. Brian was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. Brian was a devoted son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend.

He is preceded in death by his grandfather, Earl Winterstein Jr.; his sister, Brittany Ann Winterstein; and one brother, Bradley Earl Winterstein.

Survivors include his parents, Earl and Carol Winterstein of Florence; his paternal grandmother, Barbara Winterstein of Jackson; maternal grandmother, Robert and Ann Marie Wright of Flora and Mrs. Dale Reeves Wright of Vicksburg; uncles and aunts, Jo and Roddy Winterstein of Jackson, Mark Winterstein of Brandon, Charlotte and Chuck Kobert of Gibsonia, Pa., Linda Hollowell of Vicksburg, Marlene and Ricky Hollowell Sr. of Vicksburg, Robert Wayne and Wanda Wright of Magee, Joey and Jamie Wright of Vicksburg and Sid Daigle of New Orleans; and numerous cousins, Lori D. Wright, Chad Purvis, Todd Purvis, Jeremy Kobert, Ricky Hollowell, Velvet and Haley Hollowell, Ashley Hollowell, Christi and Taylor Lyle, Landry, Lawson, Lily Lyle and Damion Winterstein.
