The seemingly endless summer heat gave way this morning to cool, autumn breezes as the mercury dipped to 66 and set the tone for a weekend full of fall activities.

Today’s temperatures were predicted to top out in the 70s, but dip tonight to near 50 and level out in the upper 60s to the upper 80s on Saturday and Sunday.

The crisper temps will be just the ticket for the weekend activities that kick off at 7 Friday night with an art show and auction at Attic Gallery, 1101 Washington St. Works of all types including oil, acrylic and mixed media will be auctioned off to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina.

All 18 featured artists are from New Orleans or the Mississippi Coast and were affected by the storm.

The gallery also celebrates its 34th year of operation this weekend.

Knickknacks of every stripe will be available starting Saturday at 8 a.m. at the 23rd annual Flea Market on the grounds of the Old Court House Museum.

“We’ll have old bottles, some rare coins, some household furniture. It’s a wide range of stuff,” Museum Curator and Director Gordon Cotton said.

Later that morning, the RebStock concerts will begin on the grounds of the Old Court House, with the Mississippi Old Tyme Society entertaining crowds.

A stylistic blend of different early American folk, the band’s repertoire will follow the history of the music from past to present.

The 7 p.m. concert, in the museum’s courtroom, will feature the Celtic band Full Circle.

Concert admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children.

“We’re hoping for a real good turnout for these two groups,” Cotton said.

A few blocks down the hill on Washington Street, the 11th annual Fall Festival will offer entertainment of its own, with concerts featuring five local acts beginning at 10 a.m.

Supplementing the music will be children’s entertainment and sidewalk sales by downtown shops.
