St. Aloysius will try to break an 0-4 start to the season when they host South Leake (1-2) at Balzli Field tonight.

The Flashes come off their most disapointing performance of the season in last week’s 39-7 loss at Lake. The loss left Coach Jim Taylor’s team at 0-2 in Region 3-1A play.

“We had a good week of practice and the preparation was good, but it comes down to putting it on the field,” Taylor said. “We had to play four quarters and didn’t do it.

“Instead of playing our best game, we had our worst game of the year.”

South Leake is 1-1 in region play. The Wildcats’ lone win came against Edinburg, a club that has the longest current losing streak in the state.

“They’ve got good athletes and they’ve got speed. They remind me a lot of Thomastown,” Taylor said.

St. Al nearly beat Thomastown for its first win but lost on the final series, 12-7 at Balzli Field.

Against Lake, the Flashes suffered the same problem that has hurt them all year, inopportune turnovers. They lost two fumbles late in the first quarter, helping Lake turn a scoreless tie into a 21-0 rout in a span of only 10 plays.

Lake also returned an interception for a touchdown in the second quarter, but had it called back for an illegal block. It led to a Hornets touchdown three plays later.

“Lake had a good team but we fumbled the ball twice in the first quarter and got behind. We’re in a position where we can’t have guys play 10 different ways. We all have to depend on each other,” Taylor said.

The Flashes will continue to use two quarterbacks. Both Daniel Halinski and former New Orleans Brother Martin starter Chris Baer will see time. Baer produced the team’s lone touchdown against Lake, on a 45-yard TD pass to Chip Donald in the fourth quarter.

Alex Halinksi is the team’s leading rusher. Against Lake, he was held without a touchdown for the first time this season – a result of the eight- and nine-man fronts the Hornets threw at St. Al – and now has 339 yards and three TDs on the season. Halinski did not have a carry in the second half against Lake.

For the season, St. Al has scored 47 points and given up 136 to account for the second-worst point differential in the 10-team region.
