Hurricane time off won’t cost hourly school district workers|[9/30/05]

Non-licensed employees paid by the hour who missed days following Hurricane Katrina will be paid extra leave time, the Vicksburg Warren School District decided at its meeting Thursday.

The unanimous vote of the board will give custodians, cafeteria workers, bus drivers and support staff five additional days of personal leave to cover the days of Aug. 29 through Sept. 2, when classes were canceled. Other district personnel are paid on contracts and will receive the compensation specified.

As for students, it was still unclear if the five missed days will be made up, Superintendent James Price said. The state sets the minimum number of class days, but may waive that requirement since most schools, especially south of Interstate 20, were closed at least a week.

In other post-Katrina business, trustees voted to enact a resolution of emergency to approve a liaison to MEMA and FEMA in matters that affect the school district.

Child nutrition director Gail Kavanaugh was unanimously approved to be the agency contact in that capacity.

The board also voted to lend seven school buses on a temporary basis to the school district in Humphreys County, among the areas hit by tornadoes spawned by Hurricane Rita last weekend.
