Light autumn breezes provided occasional relief from the midday sun Saturday, as hundreds made the trip to downtown Vicksburg for the annual fall events.
The day began with the 23rd annual Flea Market on the lawn of the Old Court House Museum. With every knickknack and jewelry item imaginable, there was a little something for everyone.
“I’m just looking to replenish my stock of this kind of thing,” said Mary Carlton, as she looked at a table filled with small Egyptian figurines.
Sidewalk merchants like Ron Russell had a successful day, even as temperatures rose into the 80s.
His table of hand-lacquered walking sticks and purses he decorated himself with Native American designs was selling like hotcakes.
“I started out with 13 walking sticks. Now I’m down to four,” Russell said.
On the lawn of the Old Court House, the RebStock music festival was in full swing. The 14-piece Mississippi Old Tyme Band picked their banjos and guitars for welcoming ears.
Band leader Alvin Hudson described their style as something like bluegrass.
“It’s participation music as opposed to playing music,” he said. “There’s no solos as with other styles because we just kind of play together.”
RebStock’s evening concert in the museum’s courtroom featured the Celtic band Full Circle.
Just down the hill on Washington Street, families packed the parking lot at River Stage Plaza as local bands entertained until mid-evening.
For children, the main event was the rock climb.
Nina James, 8, gingerly climbed the 25-foot mock mountain, as her mother Mayra James cheered her on.
“I got faith in you. You can do it,” James said.
Kemani Fells, 11, his brothers Jonathan Collins, 9, and Kirajah Fells, 10, all made it to the top and back down again with help from their father, Tracy Collins.
“It’s not a race. Just keep on going,” Collins said.
