Tuesday’s arrests of three suspects in the May 8 killing of Kennado Caples continued a daily effort to clear a spate of major crimes with scant leads, said Capt. Mark Culbertson, chief of detectives for the Vicksburg police.
”We’re still working on some aspect of these cases almost daily and at any given time. There are still leads, and it’s never really stopped,“ Culbertson said.
No arrests have been made in three other cases, two of which took place within eight days in July.
One is the July 17 shooting death of David W. ”Jones“ Anderson, gunned down while leaving a 50th birthday party at the Elks Lodge on Walnut Street. The other is the July 25 beating and rape of a 91-year-old woman in her home.
Crimestoppers was offering a $500 reward for information in the Anderson case and a $1,650 reward in the rape case.
The third unsolved crime for which Crimestoppers still has a $500 reward is an April 22 aggravated assault of Herman Fountain at his home, 1001 1/2 First East St., Apt. F.
A $500 reward was still offered for additional information in the Caples case, District Attorney Gil Martin said Thursday. Police have said that some witnesses will be re-interviewed and such information will help firm up the case.
Anyone wanting to contribute to Crimestoppers can contact the office of District Attorney Gil Martin at 601-636-5754.
Family and friends of Anderson have contributed $1,650 to a family reward fund at BancorpSouth. Contributions to it may be made at any branch.
The residential break-in and killing of Caples was the first homicide in Vicksburg in 2005. Two suspects, Larry Devon Hamblin, 20, and Dwight Albert, 31, 60 Eastover Drive Apt J1, were charged with capital murder, and Kathryn Blue, 26, 1107 Stadium Drive, was charged with accessory to capital murder. Blue is Albert’s sister who reported the crime, and, police said, was Caples’ girlfriend.
Caples, 26, was shot several times inside his home at 2708 Letitia St. at about 3:25 a.m. May 8. Blue told police she escaped harm by running to the back of the house. Discrepancies in her account and evidence that pointed to her led to her arrest, Culbertson said after the arrests were made.
According to police, Hamblin was found in a motel room Tuesday and an incident ensued during the arrest.
Capt. Culbertson said he was kicked in the right knee after pepper-spraying Hamblin, while investigator Brad Derrington was treated and released from River Region Medical Center after sustaining cuts over his right eye.
Albert was arrested without incident at his home hours later, while Blue turned herself into police Tuesday night.
Hamblin was also charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and sale of cocaine.
