WC ends skid with 45-0 rout
Warren Central used some trickery to start a spark Friday night, then spent the rest of the night sending shocks through the Greenville-Weston Hornets.
The Vikings (3-3, 1-1 Region 2-5A) scored on the first play of the game and never looked back in a 45-0 victory. The win ends a three-game losing streak.
”All of the compliments for this game go to the kids,“ WC coach Curtis Brewer said. ”The kids have played hard, they’ve practiced hard, faced some adversities and they fought back.
”They’ve never cried or whined or said it was someone else’s fault. We are fighting and as long as our kids are scrapping, we’ll be satisfied.“
Warren Central started the game with the ball on the 35-yard line and moved its entire offensive front to the left side of the field. With the Hornets still in the huddle, quarterback Ryan Williams pitched to Tiger Robinson, who then followed a wall of blockers 65 yards for a touchdown.
Brewer said it was a set play to try to fire up not only the players, but the Viking Stadium crowd. It caught first-year Greenville coach Mario Kirksey off guard.
”That kind of set the tone for the game,“ Kirksey said. ”We never did recover from that. It went down hill all the way from there.“
After the touchdown, Greenville held the ball for 9 minutes, 22 seconds before missing a field goal. It was the Hornets’ best scoring chance of the night.
They gained only 46 yards rushing and 74 passing. Quarterback Lonnie Buchanan threw a pair of interceptions to Chris Lacey and Jakoby Johnson, the Vikings blocked two punts and recovered a fumble. Desmond Carson had two sacks, while Larry Walker had one.
”I had some motivation because they were talking trash and holding me the whole game,“ Carson said. ”It’s a compliment to the defense because they couldn’t stop us.“
Carson put Buchanan on his back on almost every pass play, finding himself unblocked most of the night.
”We ran away from him, tried to run at him, tried to run under him and around him, but we couldn’t do anything with him,“ Kirksey said of the 6-foot, 3-inch, 220-pound Carson. ”He did some damage tonight.“
On offense, Warren Central capitalized on the Greenville mistakes and a short field to pile up the points.
Vic Tyrone, Carleton Davis and Dexter Carson each scored touchdowns on short runs in the second quarter as the Vikings held a 28-0 halftime lead.
Davis scored his second TD of the night after a blocked punt in the third quarter, a 13-yard scamper, to up the lead to 35-0. A 37-yard Eric Richards field goal midway through the third and a fourth-quarter 10-yard touchdown run by Michael Holt capped the scoring.
Davis led all rushers with 97 yards on nine carries. Alonzo Haygood led Greenville with 44 rushing yards.
