Calling Vicksburg ”a viable market,“ Randy Burge, vice-president for retail operations, said Hudson’s Dirt Cheap will open a store at Pemberton Square this month.
”We’re just looking for different markets to sell additional products,“ he said. ”Initially, it will be an event-sale format where we run a sale to liquidate products.“
Hudson’s operates its specialty discount stores in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana.
”It will possibly happen in two weeks,“ Burge said of opening day. ”But I really don’t want to say that is exactly when we will open because I don’t what challenges we might face until we get on site.“
Renee Williams of Pemberton Square said Hudson’s Dirt Cheap will at least temporarily occupy the space formerly held by Goody’s.
”Right now, they are just opening for the holiday season. We are going to gauge the market.“
Hudson’s, which operated here in the former Winn-Dixie Plaza during the 1990s, offers an ever-changing variety of merchandise.
”Purchases consist of merchandise that may be out of season, overruns, closeouts, discontinued, customer returns and overstock,“ a press release said. In turn, that array of goods is resold to the public willing, at times, to dig through racks, boxes and bins.
The firm was founded as Hudson’s Salvage and is based in Hattiesburg. There are now 36 retail stores under the names Hudson’s Treasure Hunt and Hudson’s Dirt Cheap. The stores employ more than 800 people.
