David Brown Sr.

ANGUILLA – David Brown Sr. died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005, at Sharkey-Issaquena Hospital in Rolling Fork. He was 76.

Mr. Brown was a resident of Anguilla.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Brown of Anguilla; five sons, John Williams and David Brown, both of Rolling Fork, James Brown of Anguilla, Odessa Brown of Chicago and Robert Brown of Dallas; eight daughters, Virinia Morgan Field and Betty Collins, both of Arlington, Texas, Ella M. Jones of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Joyce Jackson of Rockford, Ill., Queen Ester Brown of Chicago, Joann Whiting of Hutchinson, Kan., Mary Lovette of Rolling Fork and Jessie Meeks of Tchula; three brothers, Robert Brown of Rolling Fork, Joseph Brown of Anguilla and Roosevelt Brown of Jackson; two sisters, Willie M. Hampton of Chicago and Mattie Stevenson of Anguilla; 45 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at South Delta Middle School in Anguilla with the Rev. Reginald Brown Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at Cynthia Dianna Cemetery.

A wake service will be from 6 until 7 p.m. Friday at Walker Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.

Marjorie L. Dooley

UTICA – Marjorie L. Dooley died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. She was 86.

A lifelong resident of Utica, Mrs. Dooley was a homemaker and a member of Carpenter United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Ann Broome.

She is survived by three sons, Peter Daniel Dooley, Rodney Brown Dooley and Mitchell Ormand Dooley, all of Utica; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Carpenter United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lauren Porter officiating. Burial will follow at Utica Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at Glenwood Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Rod Dooley, Scott Dooley, David Dooley, Mark Kitchens, Chris Kitchens and Lee Mulligan.

Patricia Ann Smith

Services for Patricia Ann Smith will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rose Hill Christian Church in Port Gibson. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Friday at Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home and Saturday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the service.

Mrs. Smith died Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. She was 46.

Mrs. Smith was a 1976 graduate of Port Gibson High School. She had been a Vicksburg homemaker for the past 11 years and was a member of Porters Chapel M.B. Church.

Survivors include her husband, Leon Smith Jr.; one daughter, Leontine Trevillion; one stepson, Deowarski McDonald; her mother, Annie Lee Trevillion; and one brother, Henry Trevillion, all of Vicksburg; five sisters, Doretha Trevillion Jenkins and Margie Trevillion, both of Jackson; Joann Gray and Sadie Mae Jones, both of Omaha, Neb.; and Mary Kiper of Compton, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Ann Sartorius Spain

HOUSTON, Texas – Ann Sartorius Spain, 80, died peacefully on Oct. 10, 2005, in Houston, Texas.

She was born to Corrine Beer Sartorius and Simon Sartorius (deceased) and raised in Vicksburg. A graduate of the University of Texas and member of Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority, she married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Alexander Spain (deceased) when he returned from WWII. She was a devoted wife and mother who raised three children while moving around the country in support of her husband’s career with IBM. Ann moved to Houston from Stamford, Conn., 13 years ago, and enjoyed being near family and lifelong friends.

She is survived by her three children: Karen and Stephen Katz of Alexandria, La., Cindy Spain of Jacksonville, Fla., and Bruce and Harriet Spain of Houston; three grandchildren, Jeffery Katz, Laura Ann Katz and Eleanor Spain; and sister, Bobbie Sartorius Hirsch of Cincinnati, Ohio. Ann and family are grateful for the kindness and compassion of her three caregivers, Bernice Williams, Mary McCarter and Margaret Taylor-Taplin.

Visitation will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 14 at the Fisher Funeral Home in Vicksburg with graveside services to follow at Anshe Chesed Congregation Cemetery. Rabbi Arnold Task of Alexandria will officiate.

Walter C. Strong Jr.

Services for Walter C. Strong Jr. will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Travelers M.B. Church with the Rev. Alfred Lassiter officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. Friday at Robbins Funeral Home and Saturday at the church from 10 a.m. until the service.

Mr. Strong Jr. died Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, in Hattiesburg. He was 60.

Mr. Strong was a retired teacher and administrator of 34 years with the Laurel School District. He taught building trades at Oak Park High School and at R.H. Watkins Vocational Center. He served as assistant principal at R.H. Watkins High School and as vocational director at R.H. Watkins Vocational Center. He was also the district vocational director and the tech prep coordinator for the Laurel School District. He was an assistant football coach and basketball coach at Oak Park High School and girls’ softball coach at Watkins.

He was head adviser for Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, which was named the Mississippi outstanding chapter for three years.

A native of Vicksburg, Mr. Strong graduated in 1963 from Rosa A. Temple High School. He received an associate of arts degree in industrial arts education from T.J. Harris Junior College, a bachelor of science degree in industrial arts education from Mississippi Valley State University and a master of education degree in industrial education from Mississippi State University. He was also certified in building construction and education administration.

Mr. Strong was a member of the Laurel Association of Educators, Mississippi Association of Educators, National Education Association, Mississippi Association of Vocational Education, American Vocational Association and Mississippi Association of Coaches.

He was a member and officer of the Community Action Club, Optimist Club of Laurel, Queensburg Residential Association and Optimist Club, Alabama-Mississippi District. He served as director of Laurel Ca-Oc Little League Baseball and a board member for United Way of the Pine Belt Region. A league baseball field was named in his honor in 1991.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Strong, and his father, Walter C. Strong Sr.

Survivors include a daughter, Michelle Greer of Jackson; his mother, Annie B. Strong of Vicksburg; three brothers, Robert Strong of Utica and Howard Strong and Arthur Strong, both of Vicksburg; two sisters, Barbara Strong of Greenwood and Penny Highgate of Texas; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Herman Tate Jr.

Herman Tate Jr. died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005, at his home. He was 49.

A former resident of Cary, Mr. Tate lived in Vicksburg.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy P. Tate; one son, Kevin Knight of Valparaiso, Ind.; two daughters, Tabitha Tate of Vicksburg and Kenyetta Reeves of Las Vegas; three brothers, Donald Tate of Cary, Robert Brown Jr. of Memphis and Nicholaus Jones of Jackson; three sisters, Juanita Tate of Cary, Linda Tate Smith of Vicksburg and Irma T. Shelby of Rolling Fork; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Green Chapel Cemetery in Cary with the Rev. James Johnson officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Walker Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.

Samuel L. Williams

Services for Samuel L. Williams will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Calvary M.B. Church with the Rev. Mincer Minor officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.

Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. Friday until the service.

Mr. Williams died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005, at Vicksburg Convalescent Home. He was 85.

Mr. Williams retired as a supply supervisor from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was a veteran of the Army, serving in World War II. He was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, American Legion Tyner-Ford Post 213 and Paragon Lodge No. 7 F&AM.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George C. Sr. and Beulah Williams; one daughter, Beulah Smith; a brother, George C. Williams Jr.; and a stepbrother, Alonzo Green.

Survivors include his wife, Perri E. Campbell Williams of Vicksburg; two daughters, Evelyn Williams-King of Detroit and Sammie Jenell Stitt of Phelan, Calif.; a stepson, Herman J. Campbell Sr. of Vicksburg; one brother, Tommy Lee Williams Sr. of Vicksburg; one sister, Mary Frances Morgan of Los Angeles; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
