Coming off two straight good performances, the Warren Central defense gets another tough challenge tonight when they face Madison Central quarterback Tim Buckley and his Jaguars in Madison.
Madison leads the series 7-3, but the Vikings have won the last three meetings.
Last week, Buckley completed 11-of-14 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns in the Jaguars’ 45-0 romp over Murrah. The win left Madison Central tied with Northwest Rankin atop Region 2-5A with 2-0 records.
Warren Central (3-3, 1-1) broke a three-game losing streak by pummeling Greenville 45-0 at Viking Stadium. WC coach Curtis Brewer hopes the big win will be a catalyst for the stretch drive.
”Hopefully, the biggest thing it did was give us confidence,“ Brewer said. ”You see you’re improving, but the reality was, we got ahead of them and was able to put the game in our hands. It’s definitely a morale booster.“
Buckley and the Jaguars, however, provide a much stiffer test similar to South Pike and Meridian. Both of those squads whipped WC by 31 points.
”Buckley is as good as he needs to be. He’s very talented and very dangerous,“ Brewer said. ”He’s a threat to run, but he can also throw it a country mile. He makes you take time to see whether he’ll hand it off or run it.“
Buckley added another 100 yards rushing to give him more than 275 yards in total offense against Murrah. In the season opener, the 4-2 Jaguars knocked off preseason No. 2 Meridian, 14-7.
”They have a very aggressive defense that runs to the ball well. The linebackers are very active,“ Brewer said.
The Jaguars have allowed 56 points this season, including only seven in the last two weeks. The one TD allowed score came in a 17-7 win over Clinton.
That means the WC offense will have its work cut out for it. They were able to have their best game since the season opener after rolling over Greenville for 277 yards in total offense.
A healthy Carleton Davis is a key. He had a game-high 97 yards and two touchdowns last week to give him 362 yards and four scores for the season.
The Viking line must give quarterback Ryan Williams (26-of-66, 320 yards) time to find receivers Tiger Robinson (6 catches, 86 yards) and Chris Lacey.
”Our line is doing a better job and we’re handling the pressure from the backside better,“ Brewer said. ”The line is improving.“
But the status of Vicksburg Post Defensive Player of the Year in Chico Hunter is not. Hunter tweaked his already gimpy knee while on the sidelines in the Greenville game. He did not play and will likely miss this week as well.
”Not having Chico out there is a big deal for us.“
Taking up the slack has been the foursome of Trey Ettinger, John Chambers, Dexter Carson and Robinson. The group has accounted for nearly 120 tackles in five games.
Chambers has three sacks.
