Eighteen absentee ballots were cast by Friday, less than a day before the deadline to vote absentee in Tuesday’s special election expired, Warren County Circuit Clerk Shelly Ashley-Palmertree said.

Residents in Warren County’s District 2 will determine who will fill the two years remaining on the term of Michael Mayfield, who resigned during the summer after being elected North Ward alderman for the City of Vicksburg.

Mayfield had been elected supervisor in the northern county district for three terms when he chose to seek the North Ward alderman’s seat. He unseated four-term Alderman Gertrude Young in the Democratic primary in early June and went on to win the general election. He started a four-year term as a city official on July 1.
