District 2 voters will be offered a chance to return to the polls Nov. 22 to decide whether William H. Banks Jr. or Larry “LD” Prentiss will serve as Warren County supervisor for the district for the next two years.
The special election runoff is needed because while the two businessmen finished atop a five-man field, neither received a majority.
Banks, 54, received 44 percent of the vote, or 478 votes, and Prentiss, 53, received 36 percent of the vote, or 389 votes.
Trailing were Michael Gates, Carl Haynes and Tommie Rawlings, who together received 217 votes.
Only 1,084 votes were cast at six precincts across Warren County – a fraction of the 6,508 residents listed as eligible to vote.
The most votes cast Tuesday were at Vicksburg Auditorium where 338 people cast ballots during the 12-hour polling period.
About a half-hour after election officials finished the tally, Banks arrived with his wife, Marian, at the Elks Lodge on Walnut Street to greet supporters and thank them. Despite having to wait nearly two more weeks to know who will fill the District 2 seat, Banks said he was confident voters will choose him.
“I feel pretty good about the runoff,” he said. “I feel the people will compare the two candidates and vote for the one that’s more knowledgeable and able to work with the people and for the people.”
The owner of 3MW Cash for Titles, Banks also said if elected he will put the needs of District 2 residents ahead of politics.
“I plan to set up an agenda for the people in District 2 and work from priority to least to make sure all the people of District 2 get what they deserve,” he said.
Prentiss, who has been serving as interim supervisor on appointment of the other four board members, could not be reached.
Tuesday’s special election was needed after former Supervisor Michael Mayfield unseated four-term North Ward Alderman Gertrude Young in the Democratic primary in early June and went on to win the general election, trading his county post for a municipal seat. After being elected supervisor in the northern county district for three terms when he ran for North Ward alderman, Mayfield began a four-year term as a city official July 1.
Before Prentiss was appointed to fill the spot until the special election, Banks was identified by the Warren County board as one of two finalists for the interim appointment.
District 2 is in the northwest part of the county and includes the Eagle Lake community and U.S. 61 North.
