After a 91-year-old woman was raped and beaten in her Vicksburg home nearly four months ago, two sketches were created, but only one was released to the public.

It was a composite of a man who ordered another woman out of her home in the same neighborhood May 30, but fled.

Now, Vicksburg police have released the second sketch, based on a description given by the elderly woman seven days after an intruder, perhaps the same person, forced his way into her home the night of July 25, dragged her into a bedroom and beat and assaulted her.

Sgt. Sandra Johnson, who interviewed the victim, said the police department did not release the newer sketch because some authorities believed the victim’s description may not have been accurate.

&#8220But I believe that woman,” Johnson said. &#8220I believe she knows what she saw.”

She gave police a description of her attacker after a man she described as young and black, wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans, forced his way into her home when she answered a knock on the door. The attack happened in a neighborhood east of Halls Ferry Road and north of the main entrance to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineering Research and Development Center.

The victim was treated at River Region Medical Center for knife cuts to her arm and other trauma. She remained in the hospital two days.

Based on the victim’s description of the man, police believe the suspect is 15- to 18-years-old with a light build, Johnson said.

But neither sketch is fully reliable, Lt. Billy Brown said.

&#8220People should not have tunnel vision of this suspect,” he said. &#8220People should not base their perception of him based solely on these sketches.”

Crimestoppers, an organization funded by individuals and business people in the community, is still offering a $1,650 reward for information in the case. And police need the public’s help in finding the rapist, Brown said.

&#8220We are receiving a few leads and anonymous tips, but nothing has come up yet,” he said.

A similar crime was reported in Vicksburg in 1999 when a woman was raped repeatedly at a home on Sky Farm Avenue while her children were held in a closet. Two men were arrested the next day, and both are serving prison terms.
