A few apartment dwellers and private homeowners, one business and a church may need to change their return addresses if two county road names get the names officials are considering.

A process began in the past couple of months that could result in a name change for Bowie Road and a part of Oak Ridge Road, said David McDonald, president of the Warren County Board of Supervisors and District 1 supervisor.

Under the changes being studied, that part of Oak Ridge Road that runs north from Culkin and Freetown roads would become an extension of Culkin. Additionally, Bowie Road, which connects U.S. 61 North with Oak Ridge, would become an extension of Oak Ridge. Bowie Road would no longer exist.

George Nasif Sr. of Vicksburg Specialty Co., the lone business in the affected area, said he is opposed to the proposal, mainly because Bowie Road has been his address since the business moved off Washington Street. His suppliers know the address and his stationery and checks have the Bowie Road address.

&#8220I’ll fight against it if I can,” Nasif said.

McDonald said the name change is being considered as a result of renovations to the intersection of Bowie and Oak Ridge roads. Before the work began, the two roads met at an odd angle, with stop signs, that made it difficult for traffic on Bowie to make a left turn to head north on Oak Ridge.

Bowie now makes an easy turn onto Oak Ridge.

McDonald said the current monikers are confusing to drivers unfamiliar with the roads.

McDonald said any road name changes generally begin with the E-911 Commission, which in turn offers suggestions to city or county officials.

&#8220Address Coordinator Kenny Staggs is already working on it,” McDonald said, adding that work includes contacting all affected residents and businesses.

McDonald said he doesn’t expect street numbers to change, only the street names.

If that is the case, McDonald said he would support the name change in both the E-911 Commission, where he represents the board of supervisors, and in the board of supervisors.

&#8220If we would have to change Oak Ridge Road all the way out, I won’t vote for it,” he said.

McDonald said he hopes preliminary work will be completed in time for the proposal to be presented to the E-911 Commission at its next meeting, Nov. 30.

This is not the first time the name of Bowie Road has come under question. When the road was built in the 1960s to give easier access to Openwood Plantation subdivision, it was named after the Bowie family, which owned land in the area. Some members of the board of supervisors at the time questioned the name because no Bowie had lived Warren County in decades.
