The best defense for Warren Central on Monday night was a good offense.

The Lady Vikes dominated Ouachita, La., from start to finish, keeping most of the play in the Lady Lions’ end, and Mary Clare Scurria had a goal and two assists as WC won its fifth straight, 3-0.

Brooke Nevels and Kari Lieberman also tallied goals for WC (5-1), both off assists from Scurria.

&#8220My defense is solid. Like I always tell the girls, the first line of defense starts with our forwards,” Warren Central coach Kristin Gough said. &#8220If your first line of defense starts with your forwards, then it’s a lot easier when they turn it over in their defensive third and our attacking third.”

WC barely allowed Ouachita (0-1) to get the ball past midfield, and when it did it was only for brief periods.

Even so, the Lady Vikes struggled to find the net. They didn’t score until Scurria, playing on the left wing, bounced a cross about 7 yards in front of the goal with just under five minutes to play in the first half. Nevels knocked it over the shoulder of Ouachita keeper Kei Kei Canfield for a 1-0 lead.

&#8220I thought the effort was good,” Gough said. &#8220This was our first time back on our own field. We’ve been playing out at Bovina on a larger field, and it makes a difference. The girls have to get adjusted again to playing on a smaller field, and tonight was good for us.”

The Lady Vikes’ dominance continued into the second half, everywhere but the scoreboard. They outshot Ouachita 18-1 in the second half, but didn’t score until a late flurry with about 15 minutes to play.

Scurria got a long outlet pass about 40 yards from the goal, dribbled all the way in and juked a defender at the 10-yard line before unleashing a shot that found the net for a 2-0 lead.

About four minutes later, Lieberman iced the game when she gathered in a cross from Scurria and found the back of the net from the 20-yard line to make it 3-0.

Deflections were a Viking’s best friend Tuesday night.

Warren Central scored two first-half goals off of ricochets, one each by Dustin Smith and Heath Carroll, helping them to a 3-0 halftime lead and an easy victory over Ouachita Parish (0-1).

Tyler Wing added a goal and an assist, Seth Hudspeth had three assists, and Jeremy Lawrence scored one goal for the Vikings, who improved to 3-1 on the young season.

WC took the lead for good at the 17-minute mark of the first half. Hudspeth fired a shot toward the goal that was stopped initially by Ouachita keeper Tyson Baldwin on the right side of the goal. The ball bounced toward Caroll on the other side of the net, however, and he put it in the goal with a bicycle kick for a 1-0 lead.

Seven minutes later, the Vikings had another shot deflected about 30 yards from the goal. Smith gathered it in this time and fired a shot over the head of Baldwin to make it 2-0.

Lawrence added a breakaway goal in the final minute of the first half and Wing scored less than three minutes into the second to push the lead to 4-0.

(G) Vicksburg 6, Terry 0

Diari Gilliam scored a hat-trick, while Holly Head, Tayvi Ellis and Becy Wilson each tallied a goal as the Missy Gators rolled over Terry. The victory improves Vicksburg to 4-2 on the season.

(B) Vicksburg 5, Terry 0

The Vicksburg boys soccer team remained unbeaten with a rout of Terry.

Scoring goals for VHS (4-0-1) were Eric Holland, Michael Cooper, Ryan Ferrington, John Howard and Coleman Morrison. Gaining assists were Holland, Ferrington and Cameron Curtis.
